1 Yon jou, Satan move sou pèp Izrayèl la, li pouse David al konte konbe moun ki nan pèp Izrayèl la.
2 Wa a pale ak Joab ansanm ak lòt chèf yo, li di yo konsa: -Ale nan tout branch fanmi Izrayèl yo, depi lavil Bètcheba nan sid jouk lavil Dann nan nò. Konte dènye moun ki nan pèp la. Lèfini, fè m’ yon rapò pou m’ ka konnen konbe moun ki gen nan peyi a.
3 Men Joab di wa a konsa: -Monwa, mwen mande Seyè a pou li fè pèp Izrayèl la vin san fwa pi plis pase jan li ye koulye a. Lèfini, monwa, ou konnen yo tout la ap sèvi ou. Men poukisa, monwa, ou vle fè sa? Poukisa ou vle pòte pèp Izrayèl la fè sa ki mal?
4 Men, wa a pa t’ soti pou li chanje lòd li te bay la. Konsa, Joab pati, li vwayaje nan tout peyi a. Apre sa, li tounen lavil Jerizalèm.
5 Joab renmèt wa a rapò ki bay kantite moun ki te gen antou nan tout peyi a. Se konsa yo te jwenn yon milyon sanmil (1.100.000) gason ki konn sèvi ak nepe nan peyi Izrayèl la ak katsanswasanndimil (470.000) nan peyi Jida a.
6 Men Joab pa t’ konte moun ni nan branch fanmi Levi a, ni nan branch fanmi Benjamen an, paske lòd wa a te bay la pa t’ antre nan santiman l’ menm.
7 Men, sa David te fè a pa t’ fè Bondye plezi. Bondye pini pèp Izrayèl la.
8 Lè sa a, David di Bondye: -Sa m’ fè la a, se yon gwo peche. Koulye a, tanpri, padonnen m’. Pa bliye se sèvitè ou mwen ye. Mwen te aji tankou moun fou.
9 Seyè a pale ak pwofèt Gad, konseye David la, li di l’ konsa:
10 -Ale pale ak David. W’a di l’ men mesaj Seyè a voye ba ou. Li mete twa chatiman devan ou. Ou menm, w’a chwazi yonn ladan yo. Sa w’a chwazi a, se sa l’a fè ou.
11 Se konsa Gad al jwenn David lakay li, li di l’ konsa: -Men sa Seyè a voye di ou: Kisa ou vle?
12 Twa lanne grangou nan tout peyi a, twa mwa ap kouri devan lènmi k’ap pousib ou ak sòlda yo, osinon twa jou ap sibi chatiman Seyè a ak yon epidemi nan tout peyi a, pou zanj Seyè a menm ap mache touye moun nan tout peyi Izrayèl la? Al kalkile sou sa pou fe m’ konnen ki repons pou m’ pote bay moun ki voye m’ lan.
13 David reponn: -M’ nan gwo tèt chaje! Men, m’ pa vle tonbe anba men lèzòm menm! Pito se Seyè a ki pini m’, paske li gen bon kè!
14 Se konsa, Seyè a voye yon epidemi sou pèp Izrayèl la. Li touye swasanndimil (70.000) moun nan pèp Izrayèl la.
15 Seyè a te voye zanj li sou lavil Jerizalèm pou detwi l’. Lè zanj lan konmanse fè travay li, Seyè a wè sa, li fè lide sispann chatiman an. Li di zanj ki t’ap touye moun yo: -Sispann! Kenbe men ou! Lè sa a, zanj lan te gen tan toupre glasi Onan an, moun lavil Jebis la.
16 David voye je l’, li wè zanj Seyè a kanpe nan lè a, san pye l’ pa touche tè, bra l’ lonje sou lavil Jerizalèm ak yon nepe nan men l’. Lè sa a, David ak chèf fanmi yo, rad sak yo sou yo, bese tèt yo jouk atè.
17 David pale ak Seyè a, li di l’ konsa: -Se mwen menm ki te mande pou yo konte moun yo. Se mwen menm ki antò. Se mwen menm ki fè sa ki mal. Kisa moun sa yo fè? Se mouton yo ye. Tanpri, Seyè, Bondye mwen, pa voye ankenn malè sou pèp la. Se mwen menm ansanm ak fanmi mwen pou ou ta pini.
18 Zanj Seyè a te bay pwofèt Gad lòd pou l’ te al mande David pou l’ moute lakay Onan, moun lavil Jebis la, bati yon lotèl pou Seyè a nan mitan glasi a.
19 David koute sa Gad te di l’ la, li moute lakay Onan jan Seyè a te ba li lòd la.
20 Onan menm t’ap bat ble ansanm ak kat pitit gason l’ yo ki te la avè l’ sou glasi a. Lè yo wè zanj lan, pitit li yo kouri al kache.
21 Onan vire tèt li, li wè David ki t’ap vini. Li kite glasi a, li tonbe ajenou devan wa a, li bese tèt li jouk fwon li touche tè.
22 David di Onan konsa: -Vann mwen anplasman glasi a pou m’ bati yon lotèl pou Seyè a. Ban mwen li pou pri li vo. Konsa, epidemi k’ap fini ak pèp la va sispann.
23 Onan di David konsa: -Monwa, ou mèt pran l’ pou fè sa ou vle avè l’. Men m’ap bay bèf sa yo pou ou boule nèt sou lotèl la. Men jouk bèf yo ak bwa kabwa yo pou fè dife, ak ble pou sèvi ofrann grenn jaden an. M’ap ba ou tout bagay sa yo.
24 Men wa David reponn Onan, li di l’: -Non. Se achte m’ap achte. Se pou m’ peye ou sa yo vo. M’ pa ka ofri Seyè a sa ki pou ou. Mwen p’ap pran anyen ki pa koute m’ lajan pou m’ ofri bay Seyè a.
25 Se konsa David bay Onan swasant pyès lò pou anplasman glasi a.
26 Lèfini, li bati yon lotèl pou Seyè a, li fè ofrann bèt boule pou Bondye ak ofrann pou di Bondye mèsi. Li lapriyè nan pye Seyè a. Seyè a reponn li, li voye dife soti nan syèl la pou boule ofrann ki sou lotèl la.
27 Lè sa a, Seyè a bay zanj li a lòd pou li mete nepe li nan djenn li ankò.
28 Lè David wè Seyè a te reponn lapriyè li te fè nan pye l’ sou glasi Onan, moun lavil Jebis la, li ofri bèt pou touye sou lotèl la.
29 Men lè sa a, Tant Randevou Moyiz te fè moute pou Seyè a nan dezè a ansanm ak lotèl pou boule ofrann bèt yo te sou mòn Gabawon toujou, kote yo te mete apa pou Seyè a.
30 Men, David pa t’ ka ale la pou adore Seyè a, paske li te pè nepe zanj Seyè a.

1 Satan se leva contre Israël, et il excita David à faire le dénombrement d’Israël.
2 Et David dit à Joab et aux chefs du peuple: Allez, faites le dénombrement d’Israël, depuis Beer Schéba jusqu’à Dan, et rapportez-le-moi, afin que je sache à combien il s’élève.
3 Joab répondit: Que l’Éternel rende son peuple cent fois plus nombreux! O roi mon seigneur, ne sont-ils pas tous serviteurs de mon seigneur? Mais pourquoi mon seigneur demande-t-il cela? Pourquoi faire ainsi pécher Israël?
4 Le roi persista dans l’ordre qu’il donnait à Joab. Et Joab partit, et parcourut tout Israël; puis il revint à Jérusalem.
5 Joab remit à David le rôle du dénombrement du peuple: il y avait dans tout Israël onze cent mille hommes tirant l’épée, et en Juda quatre cent soixante-dix mille hommes tirant l’épée.
6 Il ne fit point parmi eux le dénombrement de Lévi et de Benjamin, car l’ordre du roi lui paraissait une abomination.
7 Cet ordre déplut à Dieu, qui frappa Israël.
8 Et David dit à Dieu: J’ai commis un grand péché en faisant cela! Maintenant, daigne pardonner l’iniquité de ton serviteur, car j’ai complètement agi en insensé!
9 L’Éternel adressa ainsi la parole à Gad, le voyant de David:
10 Va dire à David: Ainsi parle l’Éternel: Je te propose trois fléaux; choisis-en un, et je t’en frapperai.
11 Gad alla vers David, et lui dit: Ainsi parle l’Éternel:
12 Accepte, ou trois années de famine, ou trois mois pendant lesquels tu seras détruit par tes adversaires et atteint par l’épée de tes ennemis, ou trois jours pendant lesquels l’épée de l’Éternel et la peste seront dans le pays et l’ange de l’Éternel portera la destruction dans tout le territoire d’Israël. Vois maintenant ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m’envoie.
13 David répondit à Gad: Je suis dans une grande angoisse! Oh! que je tombe entre les mains de l’Éternel, car ses compassions sont immenses; mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!
14 L’Éternel envoya la peste en Israël, et il tomba soixante-dix mille hommes d’Israël.
15 Dieu envoya un ange à Jérusalem pour la détruire; et comme il la détruisait, l’Éternel regarda et se repentit de ce mal, et il dit à l’ange qui détruisait: Assez! Retire maintenant ta main. L’ange de l’Éternel se tenait près de l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébusien.
16 David leva les yeux, et vit l’ange de l’Éternel se tenant entre la terre et le ciel et ayant à la main son épée nue tournée contre Jérusalem. Alors David et les anciens, couverts de sacs, tombèrent sur leur visage.
17 Et David dit à Dieu: N’est-ce pas moi qui ai ordonné le dénombrement du peuple? C’est moi qui ai péché et qui ai fait le mal; mais ces brebis, qu’ont-elles fait? Éternel, mon Dieu, que ta main soit donc sur moi et sur la maison de mon père, et qu’elle ne fasse point une plaie parmi ton peuple!
18 L’ange de l’Éternel dit à Gad de parler à David, afin qu’il montât pour élever un autel à l’Éternel dans l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébusien.
19 David monta, selon la parole que Gad avait prononcée au nom de l’Éternel.
20 Ornan se retourna et vit l’ange, et ses quatre fils se cachèrent avec lui: il foulait alors du froment.
21 Lorsque David arriva auprès d’Ornan, Ornan regarda, et il aperçut David; puis il sortit de l’aire, et se prosterna devant David, le visage contre terre.
22 David dit à Ornan: Cède-moi l’emplacement de l’aire pour que j’y bâtisse un autel à l’Éternel; cède-le-moi contre sa valeur en argent, afin que la plaie se retire de dessus le peuple.
23 Ornan répondit à David: Prends-le, et que mon seigneur le roi fasse ce qui lui semblera bon; vois, je donne les boeufs pour l’holocauste, les chars pour le bois, et le froment pour l’offrande, je donne tout cela.
24 Mais le roi David dit à Ornan: Non! je veux l’acheter contre sa valeur en argent, car je ne présenterai point à l’Éternel ce qui est à toi, et je n’offrirai point un holocauste qui ne me coûte rien.
25 Et David donna à Ornan six cents sicles d’or pour l’emplacement.
26 David bâtit là un autel à l’Éternel, et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices d’actions de grâces. Il invoqua l’Éternel, et l’Éternel lui répondit par le feu, qui descendit du ciel sur l’autel de l’holocauste.
27 Alors l’Éternel parla à l’ange, qui remit son épée dans le fourreau.
28 A cette époque-là, David, voyant que l’Éternel l’avait exaucé dans l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébusien, y offrait des sacrifices.
29 Mais le tabernacle de l’Éternel, construit par Moïse au désert, et l’autel des holocaustes, étaient alors sur le haut lieu de Gabaon.
30 David ne pouvait pas aller devant cet autel pour chercher Dieu, parce que l’épée de l’ange de l’Éternel lui avait causé de l’épouvante.

1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
3 And Joab answered, The Lord make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
4 Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5 And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
6 But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.
8 And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
9 And the Lord spake unto Gad, David’s seer, saying,
10 Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
11 So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Choose thee
12 Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the Lord, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
13 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the Lord; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
14 So the Lord sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.
15 And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the Lord beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the Lord stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
17 And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O Lord my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
18 Then the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the Lord in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19 And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the Lord.
20 And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21 And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
22 Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the Lord: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
23 And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
24 And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
25 So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
26 And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the Lord; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.
27 And the Lord commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
28 At that time when David saw that the Lord had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29 For the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.
30 But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
