1 Nan tan sa a pa t’ gen wa nan peyi Izrayèl la. Yon jou, yon moun Levi ki te rete nan fon mòn Efrayim yo leve, l’ al pran yon fanm, moun lavil Betleyèm nan peyi Jida, pou fanm kay li.
2 Men, fanm lan vin tonbe nan dezòd sou li, epi li kite l’, li tounen lakay papa l’, lavil Betleyèm nan peyi Jida. Li pase kat mwa la.
3 Lè sa a, mari a leve, l’ al dèyè l’ pou l’ wè si li te ka tounen avè l’ ankò. Li te pati ansanm ak yon domestik ak de bourik. Madanm lan te byen resevwa l’ lakay papa l’. Lè papa madanm lan wè l’, li te byen kontan resevwa l’ tou.
4 Bòpè a pran tèt moun Levi a, li fè l’ rete pase twa jou avè l’. Mesyedam yo manje, yo bwè, yo pase nwit nan kay la.
5 Sou katriyèm jou a, yo leve granmaten, yo pare zafè yo pou yo pati. Men, papa madanm lan di moun Levi a konsa: -Mete yon bagay nan vant ou anvan. W’a santi ou anfòm. Aprè sa, w’a pati.
6 Mesyedam yo chita, yo manje, epi yo bwè. Apre sa, papa madanm lan di moun Levi a konsa: -Tanpri, pase nwit la ankò isit la. Pran plezi ou non!
7 Nonm lan te leve pou l’ pati, men bòpè a sitèlman kenbe la avè l’, li tounen pase nwit la la ankò.
8 Sou senkyèm jou a, nan granmaten, li leve pou l’ ale. Bòpè a di l’ konsa: -Mete kichòy nan vant ou non, monchè. W’a pati pita. Se konsa de mesye yo chita, yo manje.
9 Aprè sa, nonm lan leve pou l’ ale ansanm ak fanm kay li ak domestik li a, men bòpè a di l’: -Gade solèy pral kouche, tou rete pase nwit lan non. Talè fènwa pral tonbe. Rete non, monchè. Pran plezi ou! Denmen, w’a leve byen bonè pou vwayaj la, w’aprale lakay ou.
10 Men, fwa sa a nonm lan pa t’ vle rete pase yon lòt nwit ankò. Li leve, l’ ale ansanm ak fanm kay li ak de bourik yo tou sele. Yo rive toupre lavil Jebis ki vle di lavil Jerizalèm.
11 Lè sa a, te konmanse ap fè nwa anpil, domestik la di l’ konsa: -Ann fè yon antre nan lavil moun Jebis yo non. N’a pase nwit la la.
12 Men, mèt la di l’ konsa: -Non! Nou pa pral antre nan lavil moun lòt nasyon yo, kote pa gen yon moun pèp Izrayèl la menm. N’ap fè wout nou jouk nou rive lavil Gibeya.
13 Ann al pi devan. N’a pase nwit lan lavil Gibeya osinon lavil Rama.
14 Se konsa yo pa rete, y’ al fè wout yo. Solèy t’ap fin kouche lè yo rive bò lavil Gibeya, ki nan teritwa moun branch fanmi Benjamen yo.
15 Yo chankre sou wout la, yo vin pase nwit lan lavil Gibeya. Moun Levi a antre nan lavil la, l’ al chita sou plas la, men pesonn pa t’ envite yo vin pase nwit lan lakay yo.
16 Nan aswè, yon granmoun gason ki t’ap sot nan jaden vin ap antre lakay li. Se te yon moun mòn Efrayim yo li te ye. Li te rete lavil Gibeya. Men, tout moun lavil yo se moun fanmi Benjamen yo te ye.
17 Je granmoun lan al tonbe sou vwayajè yo ki te sou plas la. Li di moun Levi a konsa: -Kote ou prale? Kote ou soti?
18 Moun Levi a reponn li: -Nou soti lavil Betleyèm nan peyi Jida, n’ap vwayaje, nou pral byen lwen nan fon mòn Efrayim yo. Se la mwen rete. Mwen te desann ale Betleyèm, men koulye a m’ap tounen lakay mwen. Pesonn pa envite nou vin pase nwit lan lakay yo.
19 Nou gen manje ak zèb pou bourik nou, nou gen pen ak diven pou mwen, pou fanm kay mwen, ak pou domestik ki ak nou an. Nou pa manke anyen.
20 Lè sa a granmoun lan di: -Pòt kay mwen louvri pou nou! Se mwen menm k’ap ba ou tou sa ou bezwen. Sèlman pa rete pase nwit lan la sou plas la.
21 Se konsa li mennen yo lakay li, li bay bèt yo zèb. Mesyedam yo menm lave pye yo, epi yo manje, yo bwè.
22 Yo t’ap koze yonn ak lòt lè kèk mesye lavil la, yon bann vòryen, vin sènen kay la. Yo pran frape nan pòt la. Yo pale ak granmoun ki te mèt kay la, yo di l’ konsa: -Fè nonm ki lakay ou a soti vin jwenn nou pou nou ka kouche avè l’.
23 Mèt kay la soti al jwenn yo, li di yo konsa: -Non, mezanmi! Tanpri, pa fè vye bagay lèd sa a. Nonm lan se lakay mwen li ye. Pa vin fè bagay sal sa a.
24 Bon, gade! Mwen gen yon jenn pitit fi, li menm li gen yon fanm kay. Mwen pral fè yo soti vin jwenn nou. Nou mèt kouche ak yo. Nou mèt fè sa nou vle ak yo. Men, pa vin fè ankenn vye bagay derespektan ak nonm lan.
25 Men, mesye yo pa t’ vle koute l’. Lè sa a, moun Levi a pran fanm kay li a, li fè l’ soti al jwenn yo deyò a. Tout mesye yo kouche avè l’, yo fè tout kalite bagay avè l’ pandan tout nwit lan. Solèy t’apral leve lè yo kite l’.
26 Lè bajou kase, fanm lan trennen jouk li rive devan papòt kay kote mari l’ te ye a. Li rete atè a jouk solèy fin leve.
27 Nan maten, mari a leve, li louvri pòt pou l’ soti. Li fè sa pou l’ al fè wout li, li wè fanm kay li a blayi atè a devan kay la, ak de men l’ yo lonje sou papòt la.
28 Li di: -Leve non! Ann ale! Men, fanm lan pa reponn li. Li pran kadav la, li mete l’ detravè sou bourik li, epi li pati, l’ al lakay li.
29 Lè l’ rive lakay li, li pran yon kouto, li koupe kadav fanm kay li a fè douz moso, epi li voye yon moso nan chak branch fanmi peyi Izrayèl la.
30 Chak moun ki te wè sa di konsa: -Nou pa janm wè bagay konsa! Bagay konsa pa janm rive nan mitan nou depi lè pèp Izrayèl la kite peyi Lejip rive jounen jòdi a. Annou kalkile byen kisa nou pral fè pou sa. Sa nou di nan sa?

1 Dans ce temps où il n’y avait point de roi en Israël, un Lévite, qui séjournait à l’extrémité de la montagne d’Éphraïm, prit pour sa concubine une femme de Bethléhem de Juda.
2 Sa concubine lui fit infidélité, et elle le quitta pour aller dans la maison de son père à Bethléhem de Juda, où elle resta l’espace de quatre mois.
3 Son mari se leva et alla vers elle, pour parler à son coeur et la ramener. Il avait avec lui son serviteur et deux ânes. Elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père; et quand le père de la jeune femme le vit, il le reçut avec joie.
4 Son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, le retint trois jours chez lui. Ils mangèrent et burent, et ils y passèrent la nuit.
5 Le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bon matin, et le Lévite se disposait à partir. Mais le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre: Prends un morceau de pain pour fortifier ton coeur; vous partirez ensuite.
6 Et ils s’assirent, et ils mangèrent et burent eux deux ensemble. Puis le père de la jeune femme dit au mari: Décide-toi donc à passer la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse.
7 Le mari se levait pour s’en aller; mais, sur les instances de son beau-père, il passa encore la nuit.
8 Le cinquième jour, il se leva de bon matin pour partir. Alors le père de la jeune femme dit: Fortifie ton coeur, je te prie; et restez jusqu’au déclin du jour. Et ils mangèrent eux deux.
9 Le mari se levait pour s’en aller, avec sa concubine et son serviteur; mais son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, lui dit: Voici, le jour baisse, il se fait tard, passez donc la nuit; voici, le jour est sur son déclin, passe ici la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse; demain vous vous lèverez de bon matin pour vous mettre en route, et tu t’en iras à ta tente.
10 Le mari ne voulut point passer la nuit, il se leva et partit. Il arriva jusque devant Jebus, qui est Jérusalem, avec les deux ânes bâtés et avec sa concubine.
11 Lorsqu’ils furent près de Jebus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé. Le serviteur dit alors à son maître: Allons, dirigeons-nous vers cette ville des Jébusiens, et nous y passerons la nuit.
12 Son maître lui répondit: Nous n’entrerons pas dans une ville d’étrangers, où il n’y a point d’enfants d’Israël, nous irons jusqu’à Guibea.
13 Il dit encore à son serviteur: Allons, approchons-nous de l’un de ces lieux, Guibea ou Rama, et nous y passerons la nuit.
14 Ils continuèrent à marcher, et le soleil se coucha quand ils furent près de Guibea, qui appartient à Benjamin.
15 Ils se dirigèrent de ce côté pour aller passer la nuit à Guibea. Le Lévite entra, et il s’arrêta sur la place de la ville. Il n’y eut personne qui les reçût dans sa maison pour qu’ils y passassent la nuit.
16 Et voici, un vieillard revenait le soir de travailler aux champs; cet homme était de la montagne d’Éphraïm, il séjournait à Guibea, et les gens du lieu étaient Benjamites.
17 Il leva les yeux, et vit le voyageur sur la place de la ville. Et le vieillard lui dit: Où vas-tu, et d’où viens-tu?
18 Il lui répondit: Nous allons de Bethléhem de Juda jusqu’à l’extrémité de la montagne d’Éphraïm, d’où je suis. J’étais allé à Bethléhem de Juda, et je me rends à la maison de l’Éternel. Mais il n’y a personne qui me reçoive dans sa demeure.
19 Nous avons cependant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes; nous avons aussi du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ta servante, et pour le garçon qui est avec tes serviteurs. Il ne nous manque rien.
20 Le vieillard dit: Que la paix soit avec toi! Je me charge de tous tes besoins, tu ne passeras pas la nuit sur la place.
21 Il les fit entrer dans sa maison, et il donna du fourrage aux ânes. Les voyageurs se lavèrent les pieds; puis ils mangèrent et burent.
22 Pendant qu’ils étaient à se réjouir, voici, les hommes de la ville, gens pervers, entourèrent la maison, frappèrent à la porte, et dirent au vieillard, maître de la maison: Fais sortir l’homme qui est entré chez toi, pour que nous le connaissions.
23 Le maître de la maison, se présentant à eux, leur dit: Non, mes frères, ne faites pas le mal, je vous prie; puisque cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne commettez pas cette infamie.
24 Voici, j’ai une fille vierge, et cet homme a une concubine; je vous les amènerai dehors; vous les déshonorerez, et vous leur ferez ce qu’il vous plaira. Mais ne commettez pas sur cet homme une action aussi infâme.
25 Ces gens ne voulurent point l’écouter. Alors l’homme prit sa concubine, et la leur amena dehors. Ils la connurent, et ils abusèrent d’elle toute la nuit jusqu’au matin; puis ils la renvoyèrent au lever de l’aurore.
26 Vers le matin, cette femme alla tomber à l’entrée de la maison de l’homme chez qui était son mari, et elle resta là jusqu’au jour.
27 Et le matin, son mari se leva, ouvrit la porte de la maison, et sortit pour continuer son chemin. Mais voici, la femme, sa concubine, était étendue à l’entrée de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.
28 Il lui dit: Lève-toi, et allons-nous-en. Elle ne répondit pas. Alors le mari la mit sur un âne, et partit pour aller dans sa demeure.
29 Arrivé chez lui, il prit un couteau, saisit sa concubine, et la coupa membre par membre en douze morceaux, qu’il envoya dans tout le territoire d’Israël.
30 Tous ceux qui virent cela dirent: Jamais rien de pareil n’est arrivé et ne s’est vu depuis que les enfants d’Israël sont montés du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour; prenez la chose à coeur, consultez-vous, et parlez!

1 And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.
2 And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
3 And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4 And his father in law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
5 And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
6 And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.
7 And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.
8 And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
9 And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
10 But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.
11 And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
12 And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
13 And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
14 And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
15 And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.
16 And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17 And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
18 And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the Lord; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.
20 And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.
21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.
27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.
28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
30 And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
