1 David kouri kite lavil Najòt nan zòn Rama a, li chape kò l’, l’ al jwenn Jonatan epi li di l’: -Kisa m’ fè? Kisa m’ fè ki mal? Kisa m’ fè papa ou pou li vle touye m’ konsa?
2 Jonatan reponn li: -Mande Bondye padon, ou p’ap mouri! Papa m’ pa fè anyen san li pa di m’. Pa gen rezon pou l’ ta kache m’ sa. Se pa vre, monchè!
3 Men David sèmante, li di l’ konsa: -Papa ou konnen jan ou renmen m’. Li ka di nan kè l’: mwen p’ap kite Jonatan konnen sa mwen gen lide fè a pou sa pa fè l’ lapenn. M’ap fè ou sèman devan Bondye, sa ki rete pou m’ mouri a pa anyen.
4 Jonatan di l’: -Sa ou vle m’ fè pou ou!
5 David reponn li: -Denmen se fèt lalin nouvèl. Mwen te sipoze manje ansanm ak wa a. Men, avèk pèmisyon ou, m’ap pati, mwen pral kache nan bwa jouk apre denmen nan aswè.
6 Si papa ou wè mwen pa la epi li mande pou mwen, w’a di l’ mwen te mande ou pèmisyon pou m’ kouri rive lakay mwen, lavil Betleyèm, paske se lè pou yo fè sèvis ofrann bèt pou yo fè chak lanne pou tout fanmi mwen.
7 Si li di li dakò, w’a konnen mwen sove. Men, si li fè kolè, w’a konnen li soti vre pou li touye m’.
8 Tanpri, mwen menm k’ap sèvi ou la, m’ap mande ou yon favè, paske se Seyè a, Bondye menm, ki te fè ou mare zanmi avè m’. Pa kite anyen rive m’. Si m’ antò, se ou menm ki pou touye m’. Pa kite m’ rive devan papa ou!
9 Jonatan di li: -Wete sa nan lide ou, monchè! Si mwen vin konnen papa m’ soti vre pou touye ou, m’ap avèti ou!
10 David di li: -Ki moun ki va fè m’ konnen si papa ou reponn ou mal?
11 Jonatan di li: -Ann al deyò nan jaden yo. Epi yo tou de soti, y’ al nan jaden yo.
12 Lèfini, Jonatan di David konsa: -Mwen pran Seyè a, Bondye pèp Izrayèl la, pou temwen. Denmen lè konsa, mwen pral mande papa m’ sa ki genyen. M’ap fè menm bagay la tou apre denmen. Si mwen wè li pa gen ankenn move santiman nan kè li pou ou, m’ap voye komisyon ba ou.
13 Men, si li fè lide pou li touye ou, mwen mande Bondye pou l’ ban mwen pi gwo pinisyon ki genyen, si mwen pa voye komisyon ba ou pou ou chape kò ou. Mwen mande pou Seyè a toujou la avè ou, menm jan li te konn kanpe la avèk papa m’.
14 Bon, koulye a menm, si lè sa a mwen poko mouri, tanpri kenbe pwomès ou te fè m’ devan Bondye a. Pa lage m’.
15 Toujou aji byen ak moun lakay mwen. Menm lè Seyè a va fin disparèt tout lènmi ou yo sou latè,
16 piga ou janm kase kontra zanmi nou te pase yonn ak lòt la nan non fanmi nou. Si ou kase l’, se pou Bondye pini ou.
17 Jonatan fè David pwomèt li ankò l’ap toujou renmen l’, paske li menm Jonatan li te renmen David tankou li renmen pwòp tèt pa li.
18 Apre sa, Jonatan di David: -Denmen se fèt lalin nouvèl la, y’ap wè ou pa la, paske plas ou ap rete vid.
19 Apre denmen y’ap wè ou pa la menm. Lè sa a, w’a desann, w’a ale kote ou te kache dènye fwa a. W’a rete kache dèyè pil wòch Ezèl la.
20 Mwen menm, m’a tire twa flèch nan direksyon pil wòch la, tankou se pil wòch la menm m’ap vize.
21 Lèfini, m’a rele domestik mwen an, m’a voye l’ al chache flèch yo pote ban mwen. Si ou tande mwen di l’: Gade, flèch yo tonbe bò isit anvan yo gen tan rive kote ou ye a, al pran yo pou mwen, sa vle di ou pa bezwen pè anyen, ou mèt vini. Mwen fè sèman nan non Seyè a, anyen p’ap rive ou.
22 Men, si mwen di domestik la: flèch yo tonbe bò lòt bò, yo depase kote ou ye a, leve met deyò, paske se Seyè a menm k’ap voye ou ale.
23 Pou pwomès nou fè yonn bay lòt la, Seyè a ap fè n’ap kenbe l’ pou tout tan.
24 Se konsa David t’ al kache kò li nan jaden yo. Lè fèt lalin nouvèl la rive, wa Sayil vin chita bò tab la pou l’ manje.
25 Li te chita nan plas li, sou fotèy bò miray la. Jonatan te chita bò tab la tou anfas wa a. Abnè menm te chita sou kote wa a. Plas David la te vid.
26 Jou sa a, Sayil pa t’ di anyen, paske li t’ap di nan kè l’: Se yon bagay ki dwe rive l’. Li pa nan kondisyon pou fè sèvis pou Bondye. Sèten, li pa nan kondisyon vre pou l’ sèvi Bondye.
27 Men, nan denmen, jou apre jou lalin nouvèl la, plas David la te vid ankò. Sayil mande Jonatan: -Poukisa David, pitit Izayi a, pa vin manje ni ayè, ni jòdi a?
28 Jonatan reponn li: -Li te mande m’ pèmisyon pou l’ al lavil Betleyèm.
29 Li te di m’: Tanpri, kite m’ ale paske fanmi nou ap fè yon sèvis ofrann bèt nan lavil Betleyèm. Frè m’ yo te voye lòd ban mwen pou m’ la. Si ou se zanmi m’, kite m’ al wè fanmi m’ yo. Se poutèt sa li pa nan plas li bò tab wa a.
30 Sayil fè yon sèl kòlè sou Jonatan, li di l’: -Ou se yon loraj kale! Koulye a mwen konnen se pran w’ap pran pou David. Se yon wont pou ou! Se yon wont pou manman ou!
31 Men, m’ fè ou konnen toutotan pitit Izayi sa a vivan, ou p’ap janm wa nan peyi a, ou p’ap janm ka gouvènen. Voye chache l’ mennen ban mwen. Se pou l’ mouri.
32 Men Jonatan reponn: -Pouki pou yo touye l’ la? Kisa li fè?
33 Lè sa a, Sayil leve frenn li tankou si li ta vle voye l’ sou Jonatan. Jonatan vin wè papa l’ te soti pou touye David vre.
34 Li leve soti bò tab la, li te fache anpil. Jou sa a, li pa manje anyen. Se te dezyèm jou fèt lalin nouvèl la. Sa te fè l’ lapenn anpil pou David, paske papa l’ te pale David mal.
35 Nan denmen maten, Jonatan leve, l’ al nan jaden yo pou l’ wè David jan li te pwomèt li a. Li pran yon jenn gason avè l’.
36 Epi li di l’: -Kouri non. Ou pral chache flèch mwen pral tire yo. Ti gason an pran kouri. Jonatan voye flèch la pou l’ depase ti gason an.
37 Lè ti gason an rive kote flèch la te tonbe a, Jonatan pale byen fò, li di l’ konsa: -Flèch la pi devan an toujou!
38 Pa kanpe la konsa. Fè vit non! Ti gason an ranmase flèch la, li pote l’ tounen bay mèt li.
39 Li pa t’ konnen sa sa te vle di. Sèl Jonatan ak David te konnen.
40 Jonatan bay ti gason an tout zam li yo, epi li di l’ pote yo tounen lavil pou li.
41 Lè ti gason an fin ale, David soti dèyè pil wòch la, li lage kò l’ atè, li bese twa fwa devan Jonatan. Apre sa, li menm ak Jonatan, yo tonbe yonn nan bra lòt, yo t’ap kriye. Men David te nan pi gwo lapenn pase Jonatan.
42 Apre sa, Jonatan di David konsa: -Ale ak kè poze! Nou te fè sèman devan Seyè a pou nou toujou zanmi. Bondye va fè fanmi nou toujou rete zanmi tou. Lè sa a, David leve, l’ ale fè wout li. Jonatan menm tounen lavil la.

1 David s’enfuit de Najoth, près de Rama. Il alla trouver Jonathan, et dit: Qu’ai-je fait? quel est mon crime, quel est mon péché aux yeux de ton père, pour qu’il en veuille à ma vie?
2 Jonathan lui répondit: Loin de là! tu ne mourras point. Mon père ne fait aucune chose, grande ou petite, sans m’en informer; pourquoi donc mon père me cacherait-il celle-là? Il n’en est rien.
3 David dit encore, en jurant: Ton père sait bien que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et il aura dit: Que Jonathan ne le sache pas; cela lui ferait de la peine. Mais l’Éternel est vivant et ton âme est vivante! il n’y a qu’un pas entre moi et la mort.
4 Jonathan dit à David: Je ferai pour toi ce que tu voudras.
5 Et David lui répondit: Voici, c’est demain la nouvelle lune, et je devrais m’asseoir avec le roi pour manger; laisse-moi aller, et je me cacherai dans les champs jusqu’au soir du troisième jour.
6 Si ton père remarque mon absence, tu diras: David m’a prié de lui laisser faire une course à Bethléhem, sa ville, parce qu’il y a pour toute la famille un sacrifice annuel.
7 Et s’il dit: C’est bien! ton serviteur alors n’a rien à craindre; mais si la colère s’empare de lui, sache que le mal est résolu de sa part.
8 Montre donc ton affection pour ton serviteur, puisque tu as fait avec ton serviteur une alliance devant l’Éternel. Et, s’il y a quelque crime en moi, ôte-moi la vie toi-même, car pourquoi me mènerais-tu jusqu’à ton père?
9 Jonathan lui dit: Loin de toi la pensée que je ne t’informerai pas, si j’apprends que le mal est résolu de la part de mon père et menace de t’atteindre!
10 David dit à Jonathan: Qui m’informera dans le cas où ton père te répondrait durement?
11 Et Jonathan dit à David: Viens, sortons dans les champs. Et ils sortirent tous deux dans les champs.
12 Jonathan dit à David: Je prends à témoin l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël! Je sonderai mon père demain ou après-demain; et, dans le cas où il serait bien disposé pour David, si je n’envoie vers toi personne pour t’en informer,
13 que l’Éternel traite Jonathan dans toute sa rigueur! Dans le cas où mon père trouverait bon de te faire du mal, je t’informerai aussi et je te laisserai partir, afin que tu t’en ailles en paix; et que l’Éternel soit avec toi, comme il a été avec mon père!
14 Si je dois vivre encore, veuille user envers moi de la bonté de l’Éternel;
15 et si je meurs, ne retire jamais ta bonté envers ma maison, pas même lorsque l’Éternel retranchera chacun des ennemis de David de dessus la face de la terre.
16 Car Jonathan a fait alliance avec la maison de David. Que l’Éternel tire vengeance des ennemis de David!
17 Jonathan protesta encore auprès de David de son affection pour lui, car il l’aimait comme son âme.
18 Jonathan lui dit: C’est demain la nouvelle lune; on remarquera ton absence, car ta place sera vide.
19 Tu descendras le troisième jour jusqu’au fond du lieu où tu t’étais caché le jour de l’affaire, et tu resteras près de la pierre d’Ézel.
20 Je tirerai trois flèches du côté de la pierre, comme si je visais un but.
21 Et voici, j’enverrai un jeune homme, et je lui dirai: Va, trouve les flèches. Si je lui dis: Voici, les flèches sont en deçà de toi, prends-les! alors viens, car il y a paix pour toi, et tu n’as rien à craindre, l’Éternel est vivant!
22 Mais si je dis au jeune homme: Voici, les flèches sont au delà de toi! alors va-t-en, car l’Éternel te renvoie.
23 L’Éternel est à jamais témoin de la parole que nous nous sommes donnée l’un à l’autre.
24 David se cacha dans les champs. C’était la nouvelle lune, et le roi prit place au festin pour manger.
25 Le roi s’assit comme à l’ordinaire sur son siège contre la paroi, Jonathan se leva, et Abner s’assit à côté de Saül; mais la place de David resta vide.
26 Saül ne dit rien ce jour-là; car, pensa-t-il, c’est par hasard, il n’est pas pur, certainement il n’est pas pur.
27 Le lendemain, second jour de la nouvelle lune, la place de David était encore vide. Et Saül dit à Jonathan, son fils: Pourquoi le fils d’Isaï n’a-t-il paru au repas ni hier ni aujourd’hui?
28 Jonathan répondit à Saül: David m’a demandé la permission d’aller à Bethléhem.
29 Il a dit: Laisse-moi aller, je te prie, car nous avons dans la ville un sacrifice de famille, et mon frère me l’a fait savoir; si donc j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, permets que j’aille en hâte voir mes frères. C’est pour cela qu’il n’est point venu à la table du roi.
30 Alors la colère de Saül s’enflamma contre Jonathan, et il lui dit: Fils pervers et rebelle, sais je pas que tu as pour ami le fils d’Isaï, à ta honte et à la honte de ta mère?
31 Car aussi longtemps que le fils d’Isaï sera vivant sur la terre, il n’y aura point de sécurité ni pour toi ni pour ta royauté. Et maintenant, envoie-le chercher, et qu’on me l’amène, car il est digne de mort.
32 Jonathan répondit à Saül, son père, et lui dit: Pourquoi le ferait-on mourir? Qu’a-t-il fait?
33 Et Saül dirigea sa lance contre lui, pour le frapper. Jonathan comprit que c’était chose résolue chez son père que de faire mourir David.
34 Il se leva de table dans une ardente colère, et ne participa point au repas le second jour de la nouvelle lune; car il était affligé à cause de David, parce que son père l’avait outragé.
35 Le lendemain matin, Jonathan alla dans les champs au lieu convenu avec David, et il était accompagné d’un petit garçon.
36 Il lui dit: Cours, trouve les flèches que je vais tirer. Le garçon courut, et Jonathan tira une flèche qui le dépassa.
37 Lorsqu’il arriva au lieu où était la flèche que Jonathan avait tirée, Jonathan cria derrière lui: La flèche n’est-elle pas plus loin que toi?
38 Il lui cria encore: Vite, hâte-toi, ne t’arrête pas! Et le garçon de Jonathan ramassa les flèches et revint vers son maître.
39 Le garçon ne savait rien; Jonathan et David seuls comprenaient la chose.
40 Jonathan remit ses armes à son garçon, et lui dit: Va, porte-les à la ville.
41 Après le départ du garçon, David se leva du côté du midi, puis se jeta le visage contre terre et se prosterna trois fois. Les deux amis s’embrassèrent et pleurèrent ensemble, David surtout fondit en larmes.
42 Et Jonathan dit à David: Va en paix, maintenant que nous avons juré l’un et l’autre, au nom de l’Éternel, en disant: Que l’Éternel soit à jamais entre moi et toi, entre ma postérité et ta postérité! (20:43) David se leva, et s’en alla, et Jonathan rentra dans la ville.

1 And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?
2 And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.
3 And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
4 Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.
5 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.
6 If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.
7 If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.
8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?
9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?
10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?
11 And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.
12 And Jonathan said unto David, O Lord God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee;
13 The Lord do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the Lord be with thee, as he hath been with my father.
14 And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the Lord, that I die not:
15 But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the Lord hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the Lord even require it at the hand of David’s enemies.
17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
18 Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.
19 And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.
21 And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the Lord liveth.
22 But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the Lord hath sent thee away.
23 And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between thee and me for ever.
24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.
25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty.
26 Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.
27 And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?
28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:
29 And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.
30 Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother’s nakedness?
31 For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?
33 And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.
34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.
35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.
36 And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
37 And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?
38 And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan’s lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.
39 But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
40 And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.
41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.
42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
