1 Yon jou, Jonatan, pitit Sayil la, pale ak jenn gason ki t’ap pote zam li yo, li di l’ konsa: -Ann al avè m’! Ann travèse lòt bò a, nan kan moun Filisti yo. Men Jonatan pa t’ avèti papa l’.
2 Sayil menm te moute kan li anba pye grenad Migwon an, sou lizyè peyi Gibeya a. Li te gen sisan (600) sòlda konsa avè l’.
3 Prèt ki t’ap pote jile Bondye a te rele Akija. Se te pitit Akitoub, pitit frè Ikabòd la. Yo te pitit Fineas ki li menm te pitit Eli, ki te prèt Seyè a lavil Silo. Sòlda yo pa t’ konnen Jonatan te pati.
4 Nan pas kote Jonatan t’ap chache janbe larivyè pou ale nan kan moun Filisti yo, te gen de gwo wòch, yonn chak bò pas la. Yonn te rele Bozès, lòt la Sene.
5 Yonn te sou bò nò anfas lavil Mikmas, lòt la sou bò sid anfas lavil Geba.
6 Jonatan di jenn gason an: -Ann janbe lòt bò nan kan moun Filisti yo, bann moun sa yo ki pa sèvi Seyè a. Ou pa janm konnen, Seyè a ka ede nou. Paske pa gen anyen ki ka anpeche l’ fè nou genyen, nou te mèt anpil, nou te mèt pa anpil.
7 Jenn gason an reponn li: -Fè sa ou gen nan lide ou. Ale non! M’ap kanpe avè ou!
8 Jonatan di l’: -Bon! Nou pral janbe lòt bò a epi n’ap kite yo wè nou.
9 Si yo di nou rete kote nou ye a, y’ap vin jwenn nou, n’ap rete kote nou ye a, nou p’ap mache sou yo.
10 Men, si yo di nou moute vin jwenn yo, enben! n’a mache sou yo. Paske, sa vle di Seyè a gen tan lage yo nan men nou.
11 Yo parèt kò yo, yo kite moun Filisti yo wè yo. Moun Filisti yo di: -Gade! Men kèk ebre k’ap soti nan twou kote yo te kache.
12 Sòlda Filisti yo rele Jonatan ak jenn gason an, yo di yo: -Moute vin jwenn nou non. Nou gen yon bagay pou n’ di nou. Lè sa a, Jonatan di jenn gason an: -Swiv mwen. Seyè a lage yo nan men pèp Izrayèl la.
13 Jonatan grenpe moute sou men l’ ak sou pye l’ yo, jenn gason an t’ap swiv li. Jonatan atake moun Filisti yo, li jete yo atè. Jenn gason an menm t’ap touye yo dèyè l’.
14 Nan premye atak sa a, Jonatan ak jenn gason an te touye vin sòlda konsa, sou yon ti teren ki pa t’ menm mezire yon ka (1/4) kawo tè.
15 Tout moun Filisti ki te nan kan an, nan tout plenn lan, vin pè anpil. Sòlda yo te mete an avangad yo ak tout rès lame a te vin pè tou. Tè a pran tranble, te gen yon gwo kouri nan tout peyi a.
16 Faksyonnè Sayil te mete ap veye lavil Gibeya nan peyi moun Benjamen yo wè te gen yon sèl debandad nan mitan moun Filisti yo ki t’ap kouri tankou moun fou.

22 Moun pèp Izrayèl ki te kache nan mòn Efrayim yo vin tande moun Filisti yo t’ap kraze rak. Yo menm tou yo vini, yo lage kò yo nan batay la, yo t’ap kouri dèyè moun Filisti yo.
23 Se konsa jou sa a, Seyè a te sove pèp Izrayèl la. Yo rive jouk lòt bò lavil Bèt-Avenn, yo t’ap goumen toujou.
24 Jou sa a, moun pèp Izrayèl yo te fèb anpil tèlman yo te grangou paske Sayil te pran yon gwo angajman devan tout pèp la, li te pase lòd sa a: -Madichon pou nenpòt moun ki va mete manje nan bouch li jòdi a anvan mwen pran revanj mwen sou lènmi m’ yo. Se konsa pesonn nan peyi a pa t’ manje anyen jou sa a.
25 Pèp la rive nan yon gwo rakbwa kote ki te gen anpil siwo myèl.
26 Siwo myèl t’ap koule konsa atè nan rakbwa a, men pesonn pa goute menm ladan l’ paske yo te pè pou malè Sayil te di a pa rive yo.
27 Men, Jonatan pa t’ konnen papa l’ te bay pèp la prigad sa a. Sa li fè, li lonje baton ki te nan men l’ lan, li tranpe bout baton an nan yon gato myèl, epi li mete l’ nan bouch li. Lamenm, li santi li vin gen fòs ankò.
28 Men, yonn nan mesye yo di li: -Tout moun ap tonbe feblès, yo pa manje paske papa ou te ban nou prigad sa a, li te di: Madichon pou nenpòt moun ki manje anyen jòdi a.
29 Jonatan reponn li: -Sa papa m’ fè pèp la la a pa bon menm! Gade jan m’ santi m’ gen fòs ankò, paske mwen goute yon ti siwo myèl.
30 Si pèp la te manje nan manje li pran lakay moun Filisti yo jòdi a, koulye a èske nou wè kantite moun Filisti nou ta ka touye met sou sa nou touye deja yo?
31 Jou sa a, moun pèp Izrayèl yo bat moun Filisti yo byen bat, depi lavil Mikmas jouk lavil Ajalon. Pèp la t’ap tonbe feblès tèlman yo te grangou.
32 Se konsa yo lage kò yo sou sa yo te pran nan men lènmi yo: yo pran mouton, kabrit, gwo bèf, ti bèf, yo touye yo lamenm epi yo manje vyann lan ak tout san an ladan l’.
33 Y’ al di Sayil konsa: -Gade! Men pèp la ap peche kont Seyè a: Y’ap manje vyann ak tout san an ladan l’. Sayil di konsa: -Nou se yon bann lach! Woule yon gwo wòch bò isit la ban mwen.
34 Apre sa, li bay lòd sa a: -Gaye kò nou nan tout pèp la. Al di pou chak moun mennen bèf yo ak mouton yo ban mwen. Se isit la n’a touye yo, se isit la n’a manje yo pou nou pa fè peche kont Seyè a, pou nou pa manje vyann yo ak tout san yo ladan yo. Jou swa sa a, chak moun mennen bèt yo te genyen, yo touye yo la.
35 Sayil bati yon lotèl pou Seyè a. Se te premye lotèl li te bati.
36 Sayil di moun yo: -Ann desann dèyè moun Filisti yo. Ann pase nwit lan ap bat yo, n’a piye yo jouk bajou kase, n’a touye yo tout. Yo reponn li: -Fè sa ou wè ki bon! Men, prèt la di: -Ann gade sa Seyè a di nou sou sa!
37 Sayil mande Seyè a: -Eske se pou m’ desann dèyè moun Filisti yo? Eske w’ap lage yo nan men pèp Izrayèl la? Men Seyè a pa reponn li jou sa a.
38 Lè sa a, li rele tout chèf pèp la, li di yo: -Pwoche devan la a. Chache konnen ki peche nou te fè jòdi a.
39 Mwen bay pawòl mwen. Mwen fè sèman devan Seyè ki vivan an, li menm ki delivre pèp Izrayèl la, menm si se Jonatan, pitit mwen, ki koupab, se pou l’ mouri. Pesonn pa louvri bouch yo di anyen.
40 Epi li di tout pèp Izrayèl la: -Nou menm kanpe bò isit. Mwen menm ak Jonatan, pitit gason m’ lan, m’ap kanpe bò la. Pèp la di Sayil: -Fè sa ou wè ki bon!
41 Sayil di Seyè a: -Bondye pèp Izrayèl la! Poukisa ou pa reponn mwen jòdi a? Seyè, Bondye pèp Izrayèl la, tanpri, reponn mwen nan ourim ak toumim yo. Si se mwen menm osinon Jonatan ki koupab, w’a bay ourim yo. Men, si se yon moun nan pèp la ki koupab, w’a bay toumim yo. Seyè a fè yo konnen se bò Sayil ak Jonatan fòt la te ye, pèp la te pou anyen nan sa.
42 Sayil di: -Koulye a, ant Jonatan avè m’, di kilès nan nou de a ki koupab. Seyè a fè konnen se Jonatan.
43 Lè sa a, Sayil mande Jonatan: -Kisa ou fè? Jonatan reponn: -Mwen te pran ti gout siwo myèl nan pwent baton ki te nan men m’ lan, mwen goute. Men mwen! Mwen pare pou m’ mouri.
44 Sayil di li: -Se pou Bondye ban m’ pi gwo pinisyon ki genyen si mwen pa fè yo touye ou.
45 Men pèp la di Sayil konsa: -Se Jonatan ki te genyen bèl batay sa a pou pèp Izrayèl la, li pa ka mouri. Mande Bondye padon! Nou fè sèman devan Seyè ki vivan an, nou p’ap kite yon grenn cheve nan tèt li tonbe, paske se avèk lasistans Bondye li fè sa l’ fè jòdi a. Se konsa moun yo enpoze yo touye Jonatan. Li pa mouri.
46 Apre sa, Sayil sispann kouri dèyè moun Filisti yo. Moun Filisti yo menm tounen nan peyi yo.
47 Apre yo te fin fè Sayil wa peyi Izrayèl la, li fè lagè ak tout lènmi l’ yo alawonnbadè: ak moun Moab yo, moun Amon yo, moun Edon yo, ak wa lavil Soba yo, ak moun Filisti yo. Kote li pase, li genyen batay yo.
48 Li te fè wè jan li te yon vanyan sòlda. Li bat ata moun Amalèk yo. Konsa, li delivre pèp Izrayèl la anba men tout moun ki t’ap piye l’ yo.
49 Men pitit gason Sayil te genyen: Se te Jonatan, Yichwi ak Malkichwa. Men non de pitit fi li yo: Pi gran an te rele Merab, pi piti a te rele Mikal.
50 Madan Sayil te rele Akinoam. Se te pitit Akimas. Kòmandan lame a te rele Abnè. Se te pitit Nè, tonton Sayil.
51 Kich, papa Sayil, ak Nè, papa Abnè, te pitit gason Abiyèl.
52 Sayil pase tout lavi li ap mennen gwo batay ak moun Filisti yo. Chak fwa li te jwenn yon vanyan gason osinon yon moun ki te gen anpil fòs ak kouraj, li te mete l’ nan lame li a.

1 Un jour, Jonathan, fils de Saül, dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: Viens, et poussons jusqu’au poste des Philistins qui est là de l’autre côté. Et il n’en dit rien à son père.
2 Saül se tenait à l’extrémité de Guibea, sous le grenadier de Migron, et le peuple qui était avec lui formait environ six cents hommes.
3 Achija, fils d’Achithub, frère d’I Kabod, fils de Phinées, fils d’Éli, sacrificateur de l’Éternel à Silo, portait l’éphod. Le peuple ne savait pas que Jonathan s’en fût allé.
4 Entre les passages par lesquels Jonathan cherchait à arriver au poste des Philistins, il y avait une dent de rocher d’un côté et une dent de rocher de l’autre côté, l’une portant le nom de Botsets et l’autre celui de Séné.
5 L’une de ces dents est au nord vis-à-vis de Micmasch, et l’autre au midi vis-à-vis de Guéba.
6 Jonathan dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: Viens, et poussons jusqu’au poste de ces incirconcis. Peut-être l’Éternel agira-t-il pour nous, car rien n’empêche l’Éternel de sauver au moyen d’un petit nombre comme d’un grand nombre.
7 Celui qui portait ses armes lui répondit: Fais tout ce que tu as dans le coeur, n’écoute que ton sentiment, me voici avec toi prêt à te suivre.
8 Hé bien! dit Jonathan, allons à ces gens et montrons-nous à eux.
9 S’ils nous disent: Arrêtez, jusqu’à ce que nous venions à vous! nous resterons en place, et nous ne monterons point vers eux.
10 Mais s’ils disent: Montez vers nous! nous monterons, car l’Éternel les livre entre nos mains. C’est là ce qui nous servira de signe.
11 Ils se montrèrent tous deux au poste des Philistins, et les Philistins dirent: Voici les Hébreux qui sortent des trous où ils se sont cachés.
12 Et les hommes du poste s’adressèrent ainsi à Jonathan et à celui qui portait ses armes: Montez vers nous, et nous vous ferons savoir quelque chose. Jonathan dit à celui qui portait ses armes: Monte après moi, car l’Éternel les livre entre les mains d’Israël.
13 Et Jonathan monta en s’aidant des mains et des pieds, et celui qui portait ses armes le suivit. Les Philistins tombèrent devant Jonathan, et celui qui portait ses armes donnait la mort derrière lui.
14 Dans cette première défaite, Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes tuèrent une vingtaine d’hommes, sur l’espace d’environ la moitié d’un arpent de terre.
15 L’effroi se répandit au camp, dans la contrée et parmi tout le peuple; le poste et ceux qui ravageaient furent également saisis de peur; le pays fut dans l’épouvante. C’était comme une terreur de Dieu.
16 Les sentinelles de Saül, qui étaient à Guibea de Benjamin, virent que la multitude se dispersait et allait de côté et d’autre.
17 Alors Saül dit au peuple qui était avec lui: Comptez, je vous prie, et voyez qui s’en est allé du milieu de nous. Ils comptèrent, et voici, il manquait Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes.
18 Et Saül dit à Achija: Fais approcher l’arche de Dieu! -Car en ce temps l’arche de Dieu était avec les enfants d’Israël.
19 Pendant que Saül parlait au sacrificateur, le tumulte dans le camp des Philistins allait toujours croissant; et Saül dit au sacrificateur: Retire ta main!
20 Puis Saül et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se rassemblèrent, et ils s’avancèrent jusqu’au lieu du combat; et voici, les Philistins tournèrent l’épée les uns contre les autres, et la confusion était extrême.
21 Il y avait parmi les Philistins, comme auparavant, des Hébreux qui étaient montés avec eux dans le camp, où ils se trouvaient disséminés, et ils se joignirent à ceux d’Israël qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathan.
22 Tous les hommes d’Israël qui s’étaient cachés dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, apprenant que les Philistins fuyaient, se mirent aussi à les poursuivre dans la bataille.
23 L’Éternel délivra Israël ce jour-là, et le combat se prolongea jusqu’au delà de Beth Aven.
24 La journée fut fatigante pour les hommes d’Israël. Saül avait fait jurer le peuple, en disant: Maudit soit l’homme qui prendra de la nourriture avant le soir, avant que je me sois vengé de mes ennemis! Et personne n’avait pris de nourriture.
25 Tout le peuple était arrivé dans une forêt, où il y avait du miel à la surface du sol.
26 Lorsque le peuple entra dans la forêt, il vit du miel qui coulait; mais nul ne porta la main à la bouche, car le peuple respectait le serment.
27 Jonathan ignorait le serment que son père avait fait faire au peuple; il avança le bout du bâton qu’il avait à la main, le plongea dans un rayon de miel, et ramena la main à la bouche; et ses yeux furent éclaircis.
28 Alors quelqu’un du peuple, lui adressant la parole, dit: Ton père a fait jurer le peuple, en disant: Maudit soit l’homme qui prendra de la nourriture aujourd’hui! Or le peuple était épuisé.
29 Et Jonathan dit: Mon père trouble le peuple; voyez donc comme mes yeux se sont éclaircis, parce que j’ai goûté un peu de ce miel.
30 Certes, si le peuple avait aujourd’hui mangé du butin qu’il a trouvé chez ses ennemis, la défaite des Philistins n’aurait-elle pas été plus grande?
31 Ils battirent ce jour-là les Philistins depuis Micmasch jusqu’à Ajalon. Le peuple était très fatigué,
32 et il se jeta sur le butin. Il prit des brebis, des boeufs et des veaux, il les égorgea sur la terre, et il en mangea avec le sang.
33 On le rapporta à Saül, et l’on dit: Voici, le peuple pèche contre l’Éternel, en mangeant avec le sang. Saül dit: Vous commettez une infidélité; roulez à l’instant vers moi une grande pierre.
34 Puis il ajouta: Répandez-vous parmi le peuple, et dites à chacun de m’amener son boeuf ou sa brebis, et de l’égorger ici. Vous mangerez ensuite, et vous ne pécherez point contre l’Éternel, en mangeant avec le sang. Et pendant la nuit, chacun parmi le peuple amena son boeuf à la main, afin de l’égorger sur la pierre.
35 Saül bâtit un autel à l’Éternel: ce fut le premier autel qu’il bâtit à l’Éternel.
36 Saül dit: Descendons cette nuit après les Philistins, pillons-les jusqu’à la lumière du matin, et n’en laissons pas un de reste. Ils dirent: Fais tout ce qui te semblera bon. Alors le sacrificateur dit: Approchons-nous ici de Dieu.
37 Et Saül consulta Dieu: Descendrai-je après les Philistins? Les livreras-tu entre les mains d’Israël? Mais en ce moment il ne lui donna point de réponse.
38 Saül dit: Approchez ici, vous tous chefs du peuple; recherchez et voyez comment ce péché a été commis aujourd’hui.
39 Car l’Éternel, le libérateur d’Israël, est vivant! lors même que Jonathan, mon fils, en serait l’auteur, il mourrait. Et dans tout le peuple personne ne lui répondit.
40 Il dit à tout Israël: Mettez-vous d’un côté; et moi et Jonathan, mon fils, nous serons de l’autre. Et le peuple dit à Saül: Fais ce qui te semblera bon.
41 Saül dit à l’Éternel: Dieu d’Israël! fais connaître la vérité. Jonathan et Saül furent désignés, et le peuple fut libéré.
42 Saül dit: Jetez le sort entre moi et Jonathan, mon fils. Et Jonathan fut désigné.
43 Saül dit à Jonathan: Déclare-moi ce que tu as fait. Jonathan le lui déclara, et dit: J’ai goûté un peu de miel, avec le bout du bâton que j’avais à la main: me voici, je mourrai.
44 Et Saül dit: Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu ne meurs pas, Jonathan!
45 Le peuple dit à Saül: Quoi! Jonathan mourrait, lui qui a opéré cette grande délivrance en Israël! Loin de là! L’Éternel est vivant! il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de sa tête, car c’est avec Dieu qu’il a agi dans cette journée. Ainsi le peuple sauva Jonathan, et il ne mourut point.
46 Saül cessa de poursuivre les Philistins, et les Philistins s’en allèrent chez eux.
47 Après que Saül eut pris possession de la royauté sur Israël, il fit de tous côtés la guerre à tous ses ennemis, à Moab, aux enfants d’Ammon, à Édom, aux rois de Tsoba, et aux Philistins; et partout où il se tournait, il était vainqueur.
48 Il manifesta sa force, battit Amalek, et délivra Israël de la main de ceux qui le pillaient.
49 Les fils de Saül étaient Jonathan, Jischvi et Malkischua. Ses deux filles s’appelaient: l’aînée Mérab, et la plus jeune Mical.
50 Le nom de la femme de Saül était Achinoam, fille d’Achimaats. Le nom du chef de son armée était Abner, fils de Ner, oncle de Saül.
51 Kis, père de Saül, et Ner, père d’Abner, étaient fils d’Abiel.
52 Pendant toute la vie de Saül, il y eut une guerre acharnée contre les Philistins; et dès que Saül apercevait quelque homme fort et vaillant, il le prenait à son service.

1 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
2 And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;
3 And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord‘s priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.
4 And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
5 The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.
6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few.
7 And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.
8 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.
9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.
10 But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.
11 And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.
12 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the Lord hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.
14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.
15 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.
16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.
17 Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
18 And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.
19 And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
20 And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.
21 Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.
22 Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.
23 So the Lord saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.
24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.
25 And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.
26 And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.
28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.
29 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.
30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?
31 And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.
32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.
33 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the Lord, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.
34 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the Lord in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.
35 And Saul built an altar unto the Lord: the same was the first altar that he built unto the Lord.
36 And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.
37 And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.
38 And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.
39 For, as the Lord liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
40 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
41 Therefore Saul said unto the Lord God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
42 And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.
43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
44 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.
45 And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.
47 So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.
48 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.
49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:
50 And the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.
51 And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
52 And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.
