1 Wa David sanble tout moun li yo. Li chwazi chèf pou chak rejiman mil sòlda ak pou chak divizyon san sòlda.
2 Lèfini, li separe lame a an twa pòsyon, yon pòsyon sou lòd Joab, yon pòsyon sou lòd Abichayi, frè Joab la, yon pòsyon sou lòd Itayi, moun lavil Gat. Apre sa, wa a di yo: -Mwen prale avè nou tou.
3 Men sòlda yo reponn li: -Non. Ou pa prale avè nou. Sa p’ap di lènmi nou yo anyen si nou kouri pou yo. Si mwatye nan nou mouri, sa p’ap di yo anyen tou. Men ou menm pou kont pa ou, ou vo dimil (10.000) sòlda tankou nou. Se poutèt sa, pito ou rete isit nan lavil la, kote ou ka jwenn konkou pou voye ban nou.
4 W’a reponn yo: -Bon! M’ap fè sa nou wè ki pi bon an. Apre sa, li al kanpe bò pòtay lavil la, pandan lame a t’ap soti, divizyon apre divizyon, rejiman apre rejiman.
5 Wa a bay Joab, Abichayi ak Itayi lòd sa a: -Tanpri, fè sa pou mwen. Al dousman ak jennonm yo rele Absalon an tande! Tout sòlda yo te tande lè David t’ap bay chèf yo lòd sa a.
6 Lame David la soti al goumen ak moun peyi Izrayèl yo. Batay la te fèt nan rakbwa Efrayim lan.
7 Lame David la bat lame Absalon an byen bat. Jou sa a, lame Absalon an pèdi venmil (20.000) sòlda.
8 Batay la gaye nan tout peyi a. Jou sa a, te gen plis moun ki mouri nan rakbwa a pase nan batay la menm.
9 Absalon al kontre ak kèk sòlda nan lame David la. Li te moute sou yon milèt. Antan l’ap pase anba yon gwo pyebwa, cheve li yo al pran nan yon branch, milèt la menm pa rete, li kouri al fè wout li. Absalon rete pandye anlè.
10 Yonn nan moun David yo wè sa, li al bay Joab nouvèl la. Li di li: -Mwen wè Absalon pandye nan yon pyebwa.
11 Joab di nonm lan: -Ou wè l’? Poukisa ou pa touye l’ la menm? M’ ta fè ou kado dis pyès an ajan ak yon sentiwon.
12 Men nonm lan reponn Joab: -Ou ta mèt ban mwen mil (1000) pyès an ajan la nan pla men m’, mwen pa t’ap leve men m’ sou pitit gason wa a. Nou tout nou te tande lòd wa a te ba ou ansanm ak Abichayi ak Itayi. Li te di: Tanpri, fè sa pou mwen. Pa kite anyen rive Absalon, pitit mwen an.
13 Si m’ te pran pòz mwen pa t’ tande anyen, epi m’ te touye l’, wa a t’ap toujou konn sa. Paske li toujou konn tou sa k’ap pase. Lè sa a, ou pa ta janm pran defans mwen.
14 Joab di li: -M’ap pèdi twòp tan la a avè ou. Li pran twa baton ak pwent yo byen fèt, li al plante yo nan kè Absalon ki te vivan toujou kote li te pandye nan pyebwa a.
15 Apre sa, dis jenn sòlda ki t’ap pote zam Joab yo tonbe sou Absalon, yo fin touye l’.
16 Lèfini, Joab fè kònen twonpèt la pou yo sispann batay la. Se konsa sòlda David yo kite rès sòlda Izrayèl yo al fè wout yo.
17 Yo pran kadav Absalon an, yo jete l’ nan yon twou nan rakbwa a. Lèfini, yo kouvri l’ ak yon gwo pil wòch. Tout rès moun peyi Izrayèl yo te kouri al lakay yo.
18 Depi anvan l’ te mouri, Absalon te fè bati yon bèl kavo pou li nan fon Wa a, paske li t’ap di li pa t’ gen pitit gason pou leve non li. Jouk jòdi a yo rele kavo a moniman Absalon an.
19 Akimaz, pitit gason Zadòk la, di Joab konsa: -Kite m’ kouri al fè wa a konnen jan Seyè a rann li jistis, jan li delivre l’ anba men lènmi l’ yo.
20 Joab reponn li: -Non. Jòdi a pa gen bon nouvèl pou ou pote. Yon lòt jou va gen bon nouvèl pou ou pote. Men jòdi a, ou p’ap pote ankenn nouvèl bay wa a, paske se pitit gason wa a menm ki mouri.
21 Joab rele yon sòlda, moun peyi Letiopi, li di l’: -Ou menm, al rakonte wa a tou sa ou te wè ak je ou. Sòlda a bese tèt devan Joab. Lèfini, li kouri, li ale.
22 Akimaz menm t’ap kenbe se pou l’ ale, li di: -Nenpòt sa ki rive m’, kite m’ ale pote nouvèl la tou dèyè moun Letiopi a. Joab mande l’: -Poukisa ou vle fè sa, pitit mwen? Yo p’ap ba ou anyen pou yon nouvèl konsa.
23 Akimaz reponn: -Sa pa fè anyen. Mwen vle ale. Lè sa a, Joab di l’: -Ale non! Se konsa Akimaz kouri ale, li pran wout ki pase nan plenn Jouden an, li pran devan moun peyi Letiopi a.
24 David menm te chita ant pòtay deyò a ak pòtay anndan an. Yon faksyonnè te moute sou teras anwo miray la, li te kanpe sou tèt pòtay la. Li leve je l’, li wè yon nonm ki t’ap kouri vini.
25 Li rele pou avèti wa a. Wa a di l’: -Si li pou kont li, se bon nouvèl l’ap pote. Mesaje a t’ap pwoche toujou
26 lè faksyonnè a wè yon lòt moun ki t’ap kouri vini tou. Li pale ak nonm ki t’ap fè pòs bò pòtay la, li di l’ konsa: -Men yon lòt moun k’ap vini pou kont li tou. Wa a reponn: -Sa a tou, se bon nouvèl l’ap pote.
27 Faksyonnè a pran ankò: -Sou jan l’ap kouri a, gen lè premye a se Akimaz, pitit gason Zadòk la. Wa a di: -Se yon bon gason. Ou mèt sèten se bon nouvèl l’ap pote.
28 Akimaz pwoche, li di wa a bonjou. Lèfini, li tonbe ajenou devan wa a, li bese tèt li jouk atè, li di: -Monwa, lwanj pou Seyè a, Bondye ou la, paske li lage tout moun ki te leve dèyè ou yo nan men ou!
29 David mande l’: -Ban m’ nouvèl ti Absalon an non. Li byen? Akimaz reponn li: -Monwa, lè Joab, moun pa wa a, te voye m’ lan, mwen wè te gen yon gwo kouri. Men, m’ pa konnen sa ki te genyen.
30 Wa a di l’: -Bon. Kanpe bò la a. Tann mwen. Akimaz mete kò l’ sou kote, li rete ap tann.
31 Apre sa, nonm peyi Letiopi a vin rive. Li di wa a: -Monwa, mwen gen bon nouvèl pou ou! Jòdi a, Seyè a rann ou jistis. Li wete ou anba men tout moun ki te leve dèyè ou yo.
32 Wa a mande l’: -Ban m’ nouvèl ti Absalon an non. Li byen? Nonm peyi Letiopi a reponn, li di l’: -Se pou sa ki rive jenn gason sa a rive tout lènmi monwa yo ansanm ak tout lòt moun k’ap leve dèyè ou pou fè ou mal.
33 Lè wa a pran nouvèl la, sa te twòp pou li. Li moute nan chanm li anwo sou tèt pòtay la pou l’ kriye. Antan li prale konsa, li t’ap rele: -Absalon! Absalon, pitit mwen! Absalon! Poukisa se pa mwen ki te mouri nan plas ou! Woy! Absalon, pitit mwen! Absalon, pitit mwen!

1 David passa en revue le peuple qui était avec lui, et il établit sur eux des chefs de milliers et des chefs de centaines.
2 Il plaça le tiers du peuple sous le commandement de Joab, le tiers sous celui d’Abischaï, fils de Tseruja, frère de Joab, et le tiers sous celui d’Ittaï, de Gath. Et le roi dit au peuple: Moi aussi, je veux sortir avec vous.
3 Mais le peuple dit: Tu ne sortiras point! Car si nous prenons la fuite, ce n’est pas sur nous que l’attention se portera; et quand la moitié d’entre nous succomberait, on n’y ferait pas attention; mais toi, tu es comme dix mille de nous, et maintenant il vaut mieux que de la ville tu puisses venir à notre secours.
4 Le roi leur répondit: Je ferai ce qui vous paraît bon. Et le roi se tint à côté de la porte, pendant que tout le peuple sortait par centaines et par milliers.
5 Le roi donna cet ordre à Joab, à Abischaï et à Ittaï: Pour l’amour de moi, doucement avec le jeune Absalom! Et tout le peuple entendit l’ordre du roi à tous les chefs au sujet d’Absalom.
6 Le peuple sortit dans les champs à la rencontre d’Israël, et la bataille eut lieu dans la forêt d’Éphraïm.
7 Là, le peuple d’Israël fut battu par les serviteurs de David, et il y eut en ce jour une grande défaite de vingt mille hommes.
8 Le combat s’étendit sur toute la contrée, et la forêt dévora plus de peuple ce jour-là que l’épée n’en dévora.
9 Absalom se trouva en présence des gens de David. Il était monté sur un mulet. Le mulet pénétra sous les branches entrelacées d’un grand térébinthe, et la tête d’Absalom fut prise au térébinthe; il demeura suspendu entre le ciel et la terre, et le mulet qui était sous lui passa outre.
10 Un homme ayant vu cela vint dire à Joab: Voici, j’ai vu Absalom suspendu à un térébinthe.
11 Et Joab dit à l’homme qui lui apporta cette nouvelle: Tu l’as vu! pourquoi donc ne l’as-tu pas abattu sur place? Je t’aurais donné dix sicles d’argent et une ceinture.
12 Mais cet homme dit à Joab: Quand je pèserais dans ma main mille sicles d’argent, je ne mettrais pas la main sur le fils du roi; car nous avons entendu cet ordre que le roi t’a donné, à toi, à Abischaï et à Ittaï: Prenez garde chacun au jeune Absalom!
13 Et si j’eusse attenté perfidement à sa vie, rien n’aurait été caché au roi, et tu aurais été toi-même contre moi.
14 Joab dit: Je ne m’arrêterai pas auprès de toi! Et il prit en main trois javelots, et les enfonça dans le coeur d’Absalom encore plein de vie au milieu du térébinthe.
15 Dix jeunes gens, qui portaient les armes de Joab, entourèrent Absalom, le frappèrent et le firent mourir.
16 Joab fit sonner de la trompette; et le peuple revint, cessant ainsi de poursuivre Israël, parce que Joab l’en empêcha.
17 Ils prirent Absalom, le jetèrent dans une grande fosse au milieu de la forêt, et mirent sur lui un très grand monceau de pierres. Tout Israël s’enfuit, chacun dans sa tente.
18 De son vivant, Absalom s’était fait ériger un monument dans la vallée du roi; car il disait: Je n’ai point de fils par qui le souvenir de mon nom puisse être conservé. Et il donna son propre nom au monument, qu’on appelle encore aujourd’hui monument d’Absalom.
19 Achimaats, fils de Tsadok, dit: Laisse-moi courir, et porter au roi la bonne nouvelle que l’Éternel lui a rendu justice en le délivrant de la main de ses ennemis.
20 Joab lui dit: Ce n’est pas toi qui dois porter aujourd’hui les nouvelles; tu les porteras un autre jour, mais non aujourd’hui, puisque le fils du roi est mort.
21 Et Joab dit à Cuschi: Va, et annonce au roi ce que tu as vu. Cuschi se prosterna devant Joab, et courut.
22 Achimaats, fils de Tsadok, dit encore à Joab: Quoi qu’il arrive, laisse-moi courir après Cuschi. Et Joab dit: Pourquoi veux-tu courir, mon fils? Ce n’est pas un message qui te sera profitable.
23 Quoi qu’il arrive, je veux courir, reprit Achimaats. Et Joab lui dit: Cours! Achimaats courut par le chemin de la plaine, et il devança Cuschi.
24 David était assis entre les deux portes. La sentinelle alla sur le toit de la porte vers la muraille; elle leva les yeux et regarda. Et voici, un homme courait tout seul.
25 La sentinelle cria, et avertit le roi. Le roi dit: S’il est seul, il apporte des nouvelles. Et cet homme arrivait toujours plus près.
26 La sentinelle vit un autre homme qui courait; elle cria au portier: Voici un homme qui court tout seul. Le roi dit: Il apporte aussi des nouvelles.
27 La sentinelle dit: La manière de courir du premier me paraît celle d’Achimaats, fils de Tsadok. Et le roi dit: C’est un homme de bien, et il apporte de bonnes nouvelles.
28 Achimaats cria, et il dit au roi: Tout va bien! Il se prosterna devant le roi la face contre terre, et dit: Béni soit l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui a livré les hommes qui levaient la main contre le roi mon seigneur!
29 Le roi dit: Le jeune Absalom est-il en bonne santé? Achimaats répondit: J’ai aperçu un grand tumulte au moment où Joab envoya le serviteur du roi et moi ton serviteur; mais je ne sais ce que c’était.
30 Et le roi dit: Mets-toi là de côté. Et Achimaats se tint de côté.
31 Aussitôt arriva Cuschi. Et il dit: Que le roi mon seigneur apprenne la bonne nouvelle! Aujourd’hui l’Éternel t’a rendu justice en te délivrant de la main de tous ceux qui s’élevaient contre toi.
32 Le roi dit à Cuschi: Le jeune homme Absalom est-il en bonne santé? Cuschi répondit: Qu’ils soient comme ce jeune homme, les ennemis du roi mon seigneur et tous ceux qui s’élèvent contre toi pour te faire du mal!
33 Alors le roi, saisi d’émotion, monta dans la chambre au-dessus de la porte et pleura. Il disait en marchant: Mon fils Absalom! mon fils, mon fils Absalom! Que ne suis-je mort à ta place! Absalom, mon fils, mon fils!

1 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds over them.
2 And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
3 But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
4 And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
5 And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
6 So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;
7 Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.
8 For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
9 And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.
10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.
11 And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.
12 And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
13 Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me.
14 Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
15 And ten young men that bare Joab’s armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
16 And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.
17 And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.
18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom’s place.
19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the Lord hath avenged him of his enemies.
20 And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
21 Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.
22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?
23 But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi.
24 And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
25 And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
26 And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
27 And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.
28 And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
29 And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.
30 And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.
31 And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the Lord hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
32 And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.
33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
