1 Joab, pitit Sewouya a, te konnen wa David te anvi wè Absalon anpil.
2 Sa li fè, li voye lavil Tekoa al chache yon fanm ki te gen anpil ladrès. Lè fanm lan rive, li di l’ konsa: -Ou pral pran pòz ou nan gwo lapenn. W’ap mete rad dèy sou ou, lèfini pa mete ankenn odè sou ou. Se pou yo ka pran ou pou yon moun ki gen yon moun mouri depi lontan.
3 Lèfini, ou pral bò kote wa a, w’a di l’ tou sa m’a di ou di li. Apre sa, Joab fè bouch li.
4 Fanm lan ale vre bò kot wa a, li tonbe ajenou devan wa a, li bese tèt li jouk atè, epi li di: -Tanpri, monwa, fe kichòy pou mwen!
5 Wa a mande l’: -Kisa ou genyen? Fanm lan reponn li: -Adje, monwa! Se yon pòv vèv mwen ye. Mari m’ mouri.
6 Li kite m’ ak de pitit gason. Yon jou, yo te nan jaden, yonn gen kont ak lòt, yo goumen. Pa t’ gen pesonn la pou separe yo. Yonn ladan yo touye lòt la.
7 Koulye a menm, tout fanmi m’ yo leve dèyè m’, y’ap mande m’ pou m’ lage sa ki te touye lòt la nan men yo pou yo touye l’ tou, paske li te touye frè l’ la. Si yo fè sa, m’ap rete san pitit gason. Y’ap wete dènye ti espwa ki te rete m’ lan. Lèfini, mari m’ p’ap gen yon pitit gason pou leve non l’ sou tè a.
8 Wa a di madanm lan: -Ou mèt al lakay ou. M’ap okipe sa pou ou.
9 Fanm lavil Tekoa a di wa a konsa: -Monwa, nenpòt kisa w’a deside fè, si pou gen repwòch, y’a repwoche mwen menm ansanm ak fanmi pa m’. Men, ou menm ak gouvènman ou, nou pa reskonsab anyen.
10 Wa a reponn li: -Si yon moun konprann pou li kraponnen ou, mennen l’ ban mwen. Li p’ap janm chache ou kont ankò.
11 Fanm lan di ankò: -Tanpri, monwa! Lapriyè Seyè a, Bondye ou la, pou moun nan fanmi an ki reskonsab pou tire revanj lanmò pitit gason m’ lan pa fè plis dega toujou, pou l’ pa touye lòt pitit gason ki rete m’ lan. David reponn li: -Mwen fè sèman nan non Seyè ki vivan an, mwen p’ap kite yo manyen yon grenn cheve nan tèt pitit gason ou lan!
12 Lè sa a, fanm lan di ankò: -Tanpri, monwa! Kite m’ di ou yon dènye pawòl. Wa a reponn li: -Pale non.
13 Fanm lan di l’ konsa: -Poukisa ou fè move lide sa a sou pèp Bondye a? Ou pa vle kite pwòp pitit gason ou lan tounen nan peyi a. Jan ou sot pale a, ou kondannen pwòp tèt ou.
14 Nou tout gen pou mouri. Nou tankou dlo. Depi ou lage dlo atè, ou pa ka ranmase l’ ankò. Lè yon moun fin mouri, li mouri nèt. Men, Bondye ta vle pou moun ki te kouri al chache pwoteksyon nan peyi etranje a tounen nan peyi l’.
15 Monwa, rezon ki fè mwen te vin pale avè ou la, se paske moun yo t’ap fè m’ pè. Mwen di nan kè m’ mwen pral pale ak wa a. Wa a ka fè sa m’ap mande l’ la.
16 Mwen t’ap di wa a ka koute m’, li ka delivre m’ anba men moun ki soti pou yo touye pitit gason m’ lan ansanm avè m’, anba men moun ki soti pou wete moso tè ki vin pou nou nan peyi Bondye bay pèp li a.
17 Mwen di ankò pawòl monwa va ban m’ kouraj paske wa a se tankou yon zanj Bondye li ye. Li konn rekonèt sa ki byen ak sa ki mal. Mwen mande pou Seyè a, Bondye ou la, toujou kanpe la avè ou!
18 Wa a di l’ konsa: -Mwen pral mande ou kichòy, pa kache m’ anyen. Fanm lan reponn: -Monwa, mande m’ sa ou vle?
19 Wa a mande l’: -Eske Joab pa nan plan sa a avè ou? Fanm lan reponn li: -Menm jan ou vivan an, monwa, pa gen anyen ki pi sèten pase sa ou di la a. Wi, monwa. Se Joab, chèf lame ou la, ki di m’ tou sa pou m’ fè ak tou sa pou m’ di.
20 Men, si li fè l’ se paske li vle pou tout bagay sa a regle. Monwa, ou gen bon konprann tankou yon zanj Bondye, ou konnen tou sa ki ap pase nan peyi a.
21 Pita, wa a di Joab konsa: -Mwen pral fè sa ou vle m’ fè a. Ale chache jennonm yo rele Absalon an, mennen l’ tounen isit la.
22 Joab tonbe ajenou devan David, li bese tèt li jouk atè. Li di: -Se pou Bondye beni ou, monwa! Jòdi a mwen konnen ou kontan avè m’ vre, paske ou ban mwen sa m’ mande ou la.
23 Joab leve, li ale lavil Gechou, li mennen Absalon tounen lavil Jerizalèm.
24 Men, wa a bay lòd pou Absalon pa vin rete nan palè a, paske li pa vle pou l’ parèt devan li. Se konsa Absalon al rete lakay li, li pa janm parèt devan wa a.
25 Pa t’ gen pi bèl gason nan tout peyi Izrayèl la pase Absalon. Tout moun t’ap di sa. Pran depi nan cheve l’ rive nan pwent zòtèy li, li pa t’ gen ankenn defo.
26 Li te gen anpil cheve. Li te blije koupe yo chak lanne paske, lè yo te lonje yo te vin twò lou pou li. Lè yo peze cheve yo, yo ka rive peze senk liv dapre sistèm pèz yo sèvi kay wa a.
27 Absalon te gen twa pitit gason ak yon pitit fi ki te rele Tama. Tama te bèl anpil.
28 Absalon pase dezan lavil Jerizalèm san li pa janm parèt devan wa a.
29 Apre sa, li voye chache Joab pou mande l’ al kote wa a pou li. Men, Joab pa vini. Yon lòt fwa ankò, Absalon voye chache l’. Fwa sa a tou Joab refize vini.
30 Lè sa a, Absalon di domestik li yo: -Gade! Nou wè jaden Joab ki toupre jaden pa m’ lan. Li plante lòj. Enben, al met dife ladan l’. Y’ ale, yo mete dife nan jaden Joab la.
31 Joab al lakay Absalon, li mande l’: -Poukisa moun pa ou yo mete dife nan jaden m’ lan?
32 Absalon reponn li: -Paske ou pa t’ vle vini lè mwen te voye chache ou la. Mwen te bezwen ou ale bò kote wa a pou mwen pou ou mande l’ sa m’ te bezwen kite lavil Gechou a vin isit la fè. Pito m’ te rete laba a. Koulye a, mwen ta renmen ou jwenn yon jan pou m’ parèt devan wa a. Si m’ antò, li mèt touye m’!
33 Se konsa Joab al bò kote wa David, li rapòte l’ sa Absalon te di l’ la. Wa a voye chache Absalon. Absalon vini, li tonbe ajenou devan wa a, li bese tèt li jouk atè. Wa resevwa l’, li bo l’.

1 Joab, fils de Tseruja, s’aperçut que le coeur du roi était porté pour Absalom.
2 Il envoya chercher à Tekoa une femme habile, et il lui dit: Montre-toi désolée, et revêts des habits de deuil; ne t’oins pas d’huile, et sois comme une femme qui depuis longtemps pleure un mort.
3 Tu iras ainsi vers le roi, et tu lui parleras de cette manière. Et Joab lui mit dans la bouche ce qu’elle devait dire.
4 La femme de Tekoa alla parler au roi. Elle tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, et elle dit: O roi, sauve-moi!
5 Le roi lui dit: Qu’as-tu? Elle répondit: Oui, je suis veuve, mon mari est mort!
6 Ta servante avait deux fils; il se sont tous deux querellés dans les champs, et il n’y avait personne pour les séparer; l’un a frappé l’autre, et l’a tué.
7 Et voici, toute la famille s’est levée contre ta servante, en disant: Livre le meurtrier de son frère! Nous voulons le faire mourir, pour la vie de son frère qu’il a tué; nous voulons détruire même l’héritier! Ils éteindraient ainsi le tison qui me reste, pour ne laisser à mon mari ni nom ni survivant sur la face de la terre.
8 Le roi dit à la femme: Va dans ta maison. Je donnerai des ordres à ton sujet.
9 La femme de Tekoa dit au roi: C’est sur moi, ô roi mon seigneur, et sur la maison de mon père, que le châtiment va tomber; le roi et son trône n’auront pas à en souffrir.
10 Le roi dit: Si quelqu’un parle contre toi, amène-le-moi, et il ne lui arrivera plus de te toucher.
11 Elle dit: Que le roi se souvienne de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, afin que le vengeur du sang n’augmente pas la ruine, et qu’on ne détruise pas mon fils! Et il dit: L’Éternel est vivant! il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de ton fils.
12 La femme dit: Permets que ta servante dise un mot à mon seigneur le roi. Et il dit: Parle!
13 La femme dit: Pourquoi penses-tu de la sorte à l’égard du peuple de Dieu, puisqu’il résulte des paroles mêmes du roi que le roi est comme coupable en ne rappelant pas celui qu’il a proscrit?
14 Il nous faut certainement mourir, et nous serons comme des eaux répandues à terre et qui ne se rassemblent plus; Dieu n’ôte pas la vie, mais il désire que le fugitif ne reste pas banni de sa présence.
15 Maintenant, si je suis venu dire ces choses au roi mon seigneur, c’est que le peuple m’a effrayée. Et ta servante a dit: Je veux parler au roi; peut-être le roi fera-t-il ce que dira sa servante.
16 Oui, le roi écoutera sa servante, pour la délivrer de la main de ceux qui cherchent à nous exterminer, moi et mon fils, de l’héritage de Dieu.
17 Ta servante a dit: Que la parole de mon seigneur le roi me donne le repos. Car mon seigneur le roi est comme un ange de Dieu, prêt à entendre le bien et le mal. Et que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, soit avec toi!
18 Le roi répondit, et dit à la femme: Ne me cache pas ce que je vais te demander. Et la femme dit: Que mon seigneur le roi parle!
19 Le roi dit alors: La main de Joab n’est-elle pas avec toi dans tout ceci? Et la femme répondit: Aussi vrai que ton âme est vivante, ô roi mon seigneur, il n’y a rien à droite ni à gauche de tout ce que dit mon seigneur le roi. C’est, en effet, ton serviteur Joab qui m’a donné des ordres, et qui a mis dans la bouche de ta servante toutes ces paroles.
20 C’est pour donner à la chose une autre tournure que ton serviteur Joab a fait cela. Mais mon seigneur est aussi sage qu’un ange de Dieu, pour connaître tout ce qui se passe sur la terre.
21 Le roi dit à Joab: Voici, je veux bien faire cela; va donc, ramène le jeune homme Absalom.
22 Joab tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, et il bénit le roi. Puis il dit: Ton serviteur connaît aujourd’hui que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ô roi mon seigneur, puisque le roi agit selon la parole de son serviteur.
23 Et Joab se leva et partit pour Gueschur, et il ramena Absalom à Jérusalem.
24 Mais le roi dit: Qu’il se retire dans sa maison, et qu’il ne voie point ma face. Et Absalom se retira dans sa maison, et il ne vit point la face du roi.
25 Il n’y avait pas un homme dans tout Israël aussi renommé qu’Absalom pour sa beauté; depuis la plante du pied jusqu’au sommet de la tête, il n’y avait point en lui de défaut.
26 Lorsqu’il se rasait la tête, -c’était chaque année qu’il se la rasait, parce que sa chevelure lui pesait, -le poids des cheveux de sa tête était de deux cents sicles, poids du roi.
27 Il naquit à Absalom trois fils, et une fille nommée Tamar, qui était une femme belle de figure.
28 Absalom demeura deux ans à Jérusalem, sans voir la face du roi.
29 Il fit demander Joab, pour l’envoyer vers le roi; mais Joab ne voulut point venir auprès de lui. Il le fit demander une seconde fois; et Joab ne voulut point venir.
30 Absalom dit alors à ses serviteurs: Voyez, le champ de Joab est à côté du mien; il y a de l’orge; allez et mettez-y le feu. Et les serviteurs d’Absalom mirent le feu au champ.
31 Joab se leva et se rendit auprès d’Absalom, dans sa maison. Il lui dit: Pourquoi tes serviteurs ont-ils mis le feu au champ qui m’appartient?
32 Absalom répondit à Joab: Voici, je t’ai fait dire: Viens ici, et je t’enverrai vers le roi, afin que tu lui dises: Pourquoi suis-je revenu de Gueschur? Il vaudrait mieux pour moi que j’y fusse encore. Je désire maintenant voir la face du roi; et s’il y a quelque crime en moi, qu’il me fasse mourir.
33 Joab alla vers le roi, et lui rapporta cela. Et le roi appela Absalom, qui vint auprès de lui et se prosterna la face contre terre en sa présence. Le roi baisa Absalom.

1 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom.
2 And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead:
3 And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.
4 And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.
5 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.
6 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him.
7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
8 And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee.
9 And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.
10 And the king said, Whoever saith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.
11 Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
12 Then the woman said, Let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.
13 And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished.
14 For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.
15 Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.
16 For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
17 Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God will be with thee.
18 Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
19 And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid:
20 To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.
21 And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.
22 And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.
23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
24 And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king’s face.
25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
26 And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year’s end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king’s weight.
27 And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.
28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king’s face.
29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.
30 Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab’s field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
31 Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?
32 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
33 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
