1 Samyèl di Sayil: -Se mwen menm Seyè a te voye pou vide lwil sou tèt ou pou ou te ka wa sou pèp Izrayèl la. Koulye a, koute pawòl Seyè a.
2 Men sa Seyè ki gen tout pouvwa a voye di ou: Li pral pini moun Amalèk yo paske yo te kenbe tèt ak pèp Izrayèl la lè yo t’ap moute soti peyi Lejip.
3 Koulye a, leve al atake moun Amalèk yo. W’a pran tou sa ki pou yo, w’a ofri yo bay Seyè a. Ou p’ap gen pitye pou pesonn lakay yo: N’a touye fanm kou gason, timoun ak ti bebe nan tete, ata bèf, mouton, chamo ak bourik.
4 Sayil rele tout sòlda li yo. Li pase yo enspeksyon lavil Telayim. Te gen desanmil (200.000) sòlda apye ki te moun Izrayèl ak dimil (10.000) sòlda ki te moun Jida.
5 Lèfini, li desann toupre yonn nan lavil moun Amalèk yo. L’ al kache kò li nan yon ravin chèch.
6 Apre sa, li voye avèti moun Kayen yo: -Wete kò nou! Kite moun Amalèk yo pou kont yo, pou nou pa touye nou ansanm ak yo. Paske nou menm moun Kayen, nou te aji byen ak pèp Izrayèl la lè yo t’ap tounen soti nan peyi Lejip la. Se konsa moun Kayen yo pati, yo wete kò yo nan mitan moun Amalèk yo.
7 Sayil bat moun Amalèk yo depi lavil Avila rive Chou sou bò solèy leve peyi Lejip.
8 Li pran Agag, wa moun Amalèk yo, tou vivan, men li touye tout rès moun yo tankou yon ofrann pou Bondye.
9 Men Sayil ak sòlda li yo pa t’ touye Agag. Yo pa t’ touye pi bèl mouton yo ni pi bèl bèf yo, ni yo pa t’ touye ankenn bèt ki te bon. Men, yo touye tout bèt ki te lèd, tout bèt ki te mèg tankou yon ofrann pou Bondye.
10 Seyè a pale ak Samyèl, li di l’ konsa:
11 -Mwen règrèt mwen te fè Sayil wa. Li vire do ban mwen. Li pa fè sa mwen ba li lòd fè. Samyèl pa t’ kontan, li fè tout nwit lan ap lapriyè nan pye Seyè a.
12 Nan denmen maten, bonè bonè, li soti al chache Sayil. Yo vin di Samyèl Sayil t’ ale lavil Kamèl, kote li fè bati yon moniman pou tèt li, apre sa, li tounen isit, li desann lavil Gilgal.
13 Samyèl al jwenn Sayil. Sayil vin di l’ bonjou: -Se pou Seyè a beni ou! Mwen fè tou sa li te ban m’ lòd fè.
14 Samyèl mande l’: -Ki tout bri mouton ak bèf m’ap tande nan zòrèy mwen konsa?
15 Sayil reponn li: -Anhan! Se bèt sòlda mwen yo pran kay moun Amalèk yo. Yo pran pi bèl mouton yo ak pi bèl bèf yo, yo pa touye yo pou yo te ka ofri yo bay Seyè a, Bondye ou la. Men, yo touye tout rès yo nèt tankou yon ofrann pou Bondye.
16 Samyèl di l’ konsa: -Pe bouch ou, tande! Kite m’ di ou sa Seyè a te vin di m’ lannwit lan. Sayil di li: -Pale non!
17 Samyèl di li: -Atout yon lè ou te rekonèt ou pa t’ anyen, jòdi a se pa ou menm ki chèf tout branch fanmi pèp Izrayèl la? Se pa Seyè a menm ki te chwazi ou pou wa pèp Izrayèl la?
18 Li voye ou ale avèk lòd espre pou ou te touye tout moun Amalèk yo, bann moun sa yo k’ap fè sa ki mal, tankou yon ofrann pou Bondye. Se pou ou te goumen ak yo jouk ou te fin touye yo tout.
19 Poukisa ou pa koute sa Seyè a te di ou? Poukisa ou lage kò ou sou sa ou te pran nan men lènmi ou yo, epi ou fè sa ki pa fè Seyè a plezi.
20 Sayil reponn Samyèl li di li: -Mwen fè tou sa Seyè a te di m’ fè! Mwen mache dapre lòd li. Mwen pran Agag, wa moun Amalèk yo, mwen tounen avè l’. Mwen touye tout rès moun Amalèk yo tankou yon ofrann pou Bondye.
21 Men sòlda mwen yo pa t’ touye bèl mouton ak pi bèl bèf yo te jwenn nan sa yo te pran lakay lènmi sa yo. Yo pote yo isit la, lavil Gilgal, pou yo te ka ofri yo sou lotèl la bay Seyè a, Bondye ou la.
22 Lè sa a, Samyèl di l’ konsa: -Dapre ou, kisa Seyè a pito: yon moun k’ap ofri bèt pou boule nan dife, k’ap fè tout kalite ofrann bèt pou li, osinon yon moun k’ap fè sa li di l’ fè a? Konn sa tande! Pito yon moun fè sa Seyè a di l’ fè a pase pou l’ touye bèt ofri pou Bondye. Pito yon moun soumèt devan Bondye pase pou l’ ofri bèl belye chatre pou Seyè a.
23 Dezobeyi Bondye nan sa l’ mande ou fè a se menm bagay ak fè maji. Fè tèt di ak Bondye se menm bagay ak sèvi zidòl. Enben, ou voye pawòl Bondye a jete, Seyè a wete ou nan plas wa a, li voye ou jete tou. Li pa gen anyen pou l’ wè avè ou ankò!
24 Sayil reponn li: -Mwen peche, mwen pa fè sa Seyè a te ban m’ lòd fè. Mwen pa t’ koute pawòl ou te di m’ lan. Se pè mwen te pè mesye m’ yo kifè m’ fè sa yo te vle fè a.
25 Men koulye a, tanpri, padonnen peche m’ lan. Tounen avè m’ pou m’ ka sèvi Seyè a.
26 Samyèl di li: -Non, mwen p’ap tounen avè ou. Paske ou voye pawòl Bondye a jete, Seyè a wete ou nan plas wa a, li voye ou jete tou.
27 Samyèl fè sa li vire pou l’ ale, Sayil kenbe rad li, rad la chire.
28 Samyèl di li: -Seyè a rache gouvènman peyi Izrayèl la nan men ou jòdi a. Li rale l’ nan men ou. Li pral renmèt li bay yon lòt moun ki pi bon pase ou.
29 Bondye ki wa pèp Izrayèl la pa konn manti, ni li pa konn chanje lide. Se pa moun li ye. Li p’ap chanje pawòl.
30 Sayil reponn li: -Mwen peche, se vre! Men, pa fè m’ wont devan tout chèf pèp mwen an, devan tout pèp Izrayèl la. Tounen avè m’ pou m’ ka fè sèvis pou Seyè a, Bondye ou la.
31 Se konsa Samyèl tounen avèk Sayil, epi Sayil fè sèvis pou Seyè a.
32 Apre sa, Samyèl di konsa: -Mennen Agag, wa moun Amalèk yo, ban mwen. Agag vin jwenn li. Li t’ap tranble tèlman li te pè. Li t’ap di nan kè l’: Ala bagay di, mezanmi, se lanmò!
33 Samyèl di li: -Avèk nepe ou, ou te fè anpil manman pèdi pitit yo. Koulye a, nan tout fanm ki sou latè, manman ou pral pèdi pitit pa li tou. Epi li koupe Agag an moso la devan lotèl Seyè a lavil Gilgal.
34 Lèfini, Samyèl desann lavil Rama. Sayil menm moute al lakay li lavil Gibeya.
35 Depi lè sa a, Samyèl pa janm wè wa Sayil ankò jouk li mouri. Men, sa te fè l’ lapenn anpil pou Sayil. Seyè a menm te règrèt deske li te fè Sayil wa pèp Izrayèl la.

1 Samuel dit à Saül: C’est moi que l’Éternel a envoyé pour t’oindre roi sur son peuple, sur Israël: écoute donc ce que dit l’Éternel.
2 Ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées: Je me souviens de ce qu’Amalek fit à Israël, lorsqu’il lui ferma le chemin à sa sortie d’Égypte.
3 Va maintenant, frappe Amalek, et dévouez par interdit tout ce qui lui appartient; tu ne l’épargneras point, et tu feras mourir hommes et femmes, enfants et nourrissons, boeufs et brebis, chameaux et ânes.
4 Saül convoqua le peuple, et en fit la revue à Thelaïm: il y avait deux cent mille hommes de pied, et dix mille hommes de Juda.
5 Saül marcha jusqu’à la ville d’Amalek, et mit une embuscade dans la vallée.
6 Il dit aux Kéniens: Allez, retirez-vous, sortez du milieu d’Amalek, afin que je ne vous fasse pas périr avec lui; car vous avez eu de la bonté pour tous les enfants d’Israël, lorsqu’ils montèrent d’Égypte. Et les Kéniens se retirèrent du milieu d’Amalek.
7 Saül battit Amalek depuis Havila jusqu’à Schur, qui est en face de l’Égypte.
8 Il prit vivant Agag, roi d’Amalek, et il dévoua par interdit tout le peuple en le passant au fil de l’épée.
9 Mais Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag, et les meilleures brebis, les meilleurs boeufs, les meilleures bêtes de la seconde portée, les agneaux gras, et tout ce qu’il y avait de bon; ils ne voulurent pas le dévouer par interdit, et ils dévouèrent seulement tout ce qui était méprisable et chétif.
10 L’Éternel adressa la parole à Samuel, et lui dit:
11 Je me repens d’avoir établi Saül pour roi, car il se détourne de moi et il n’observe point mes paroles. Samuel fut irrité, et il cria à l’Éternel toute la nuit.
12 Il se leva de bon matin, pour aller au-devant de Saül. Et on vint lui dire: Saül est allé à Carmel, et voici, il s’est érigé un monument; puis il s’en est retourné, et, passant plus loin, il est descendu à Guilgal.
13 Samuel se rendit auprès de Saül, et Saül lui dit: Sois béni de l’Éternel! J’ai observé la parole de l’Éternel.
14 Samuel dit: Qu’est-ce donc que ce bêlement de brebis qui parvient à mes oreilles, et ce mugissement de boeufs que j’entends?
15 Saül répondit: Ils les ont amenés de chez les Amalécites, parce que le peuple a épargné les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs boeufs, afin de les sacrifier à l’Éternel, ton Dieu; et le reste, nous l’avons dévoué par interdit.
16 Samuel dit à Saül: Arrête, et je te déclarerai ce que l’Éternel m’a dit cette nuit. Et Saül lui dit: Parle!
17 Samuel dit: Lorsque tu étais petit à tes yeux, n’es-tu pas devenu le chef des tribus d’Israël, et l’Éternel ne t’a-t-il pas oint pour que tu sois roi sur Israël?
18 L’Éternel t’avait fait partir, en disant: Va, et dévoue par interdit ces pécheurs, les Amalécites; tu leur feras la guerre jusqu’à ce que tu les aies exterminés.
19 Pourquoi n’as-tu pas écouté la voix de l’Éternel? pourquoi t’es-tu jeté sur le butin, et as-tu fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel?
20 Saül répondit à Samuel: J’ai bien écouté la voix de l’Éternel, et j’ai suivi le chemin par lequel m’envoyait l’Éternel. J’ai amené Agag, roi d’Amalek, et j’ai dévoué par interdit les Amalécites;
21 mais le peuple a pris sur le butin des brebis et des boeufs, comme prémices de ce qui devait être dévoué, afin de les sacrifier à l’Éternel, ton Dieu, à Guilgal.
22 Samuel dit: L’Éternel trouve-t-il du plaisir dans les holocaustes et les sacrifices, comme dans l’obéissance à la voix de l’Éternel? Voici, l’obéissance vaut mieux que les sacrifices, et l’observation de sa parole vaut mieux que la graisse des béliers.
23 Car la désobéissance est aussi coupable que la divination, et la résistance ne l’est pas moins que l’idolâtrie et les théraphim. Puisque tu as rejeté la parole de l’Éternel, il te rejette aussi comme roi.
24 Alors Saül dit à Samuel: J’ai péché, car j’ai transgressé l’ordre de l’Éternel, et je n’ai pas obéi à tes paroles; je craignais le peuple, et j’ai écouté sa voix.
25 Maintenant, je te prie, pardonne mon péché, reviens avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l’Éternel.
26 Samuel dit à Saül: Je ne retournerai point avec toi; car tu as rejeté la parole de l’Éternel, et l’Éternel te rejette, afin que tu ne sois plus roi sur Israël.
27 Et comme Samuel se tournait pour s’en aller, Saül le saisit par le pan de son manteau, qui se déchira.
28 Samuel lui dit: L’Éternel déchire aujourd’hui de dessus toi la royauté d’Israël, et il la donne à un autre, qui est meilleur que toi.
29 Celui qui est la force d’Israël ne ment point et ne se repent point, car il n’est pas un homme pour se repentir.
30 Saül dit encore: J’ai péché! Maintenant, je te prie, honore-moi en présence des anciens de mon peuple et en présence d’Israël; reviens avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l’Éternel, ton Dieu.
31 Samuel retourna et suivit Saül, et Saül se prosterna devant l’Éternel.
32 Puis Samuel dit: Amenez-moi Agag, roi d’Amalek. Et Agag s’avança vers lui d’un air joyeux; il disait: Certainement, l’amertume de la mort est passée.
33 Samuel dit: De même que ton épée a privé des femmes de leurs enfants, ainsi ta mère entre les femmes sera privée d’un fils. Et Samuel mit Agag en pièces devant l’Éternel, à Guilgal.
34 Samuel partit pour Rama, et Saül monta dans sa maison à Guibea de Saül.
35 Samuel n’alla plus voir Saül jusqu’au jour de sa mort; car Samuel pleurait sur Saül, parce que l’Éternel se repentait d’avoir établi Saül roi d’Israël.

1 Samuel also said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord.
2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
4 And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.
6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.
8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
10 Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying,
11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night.
12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.
13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the Lord: I have performed the commandment of the Lord.
14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel?
18 And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord?
20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal.
22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord.
26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.
28 And Samuel said unto him, The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.
30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God.
31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the Lord.
32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
33 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
