2 Moun peyi Madyan yo te pi fò pase moun pèp Izrayèl yo. Se poutèt sa, moun pèp Izrayèl yo al kache kò yo nan fon ravin, nan gwòt, nan twou wòch yo jwenn nan mòn yo.
3 Chak fwa moun Izrayèl yo te fè yon ti plante, moun Madyan yo moute ansanm avèk moun Amalèk yo ak lòt bann moun k’ap viv sou bò solèy leve, yo vin atake yo.
4 Yo moute tant yo sou tè moun Izrayèl yo, yo ravaje tout rekòt yo rive jouk toupre lavil Gaza. Yo pa kite anyen pou moun Izrayèl yo manje, pa menm yon mouton, yon bèf osinon yon bourik.
5 Lè konsa, yo moute ak tout tant yo ak bann bèt yo. Yo moute an kantite, ou ta di bann krikèt vèt. Ou pa ka konte konbe ki genyen, ni kantite chamo yo mennen ak yo. Yo te vin nan peyi a pou ravaje l’.
6 Moun peyi Madyan yo te fini ak moun Izrayèl yo. Lè sa a, moun Izrayèl yo kriye nan pye Seyè a, yo mande l’ sekou.
7 Lè pèp Izrayèl la te kriye nan pye Seyè a pou moun peyi Madyan yo,
8 Seyè a te voye yon pwofèt bay pèp la ki di yo: -Men sa Seyè a, Bondye pèp Izrayèl la, voye di nou: Se mwen menm ki te fè nou soti nan peyi Lejip kote nou te nan esklavaj la.
9 Mwen te delivre nou anba men moun Lejip yo ak anba men tout lòt moun ki t’ap malmennen nou isit la. Mwen mete yo deyò pou yo fè plas pou nou, lèfini mwen ban nou peyi moun sa yo pou nou rete.
10 Mwen te di nou se mwen menm Seyè a ki Bondye nou an. Koulye a nou rete nan peyi moun Amori yo, piga n’ al sèvi bann bondye moun sa yo. Men, nou pa t’ koute m’ lè m’ te pale nou.
11 Lè sa a, zanj Seyè a vini, li chita anba pye chenn ki toupre yon ti bouk yo rele Ofra, ki te pou Joas, moun fanmi Abyezè yo. Jedeyon, pitit gason l’ lan, t’ap bat ble an kachèt anndan kay kote yo konn kraze rezen an, pou moun Madyan yo pa t’ vin pran l’ nan men l’.
12 Zanj Seyè a parèt devan l’, li di l’ konsa: -Bonjou, vanyan sòlda! Seyè a avè ou!
13 Jedeyon reponn li: -Adye, msye! Si Seyè a avè nou vre, manyè di m’ poukisa tout bagay sa yo rive nou! Kote tout bèl bagay zansèt nou yo te rakonte nou Seyè a te konn fè, jan se li menm ki te fè nou soti kite peyi Lejip? Men koulye a, Seyè a lage nou, li kite moun Madyan yo fè sa yo vle ak nou.
14 Lè sa a, Seyè a bay Jedeyon lòd sa a, li di l’: -Ale non. Avèk fòs kouraj ou genyen an, w’a delivre pèp Izrayèl la anba men moun peyi Madyan yo. Se mwen menm menm ki voye ou!
15 Jedeyon reponn li! -Tanpri, mèt! Avèk kisa mwen pral delivre pèp Izrayèl la? Fanmi mwen, se li ki gen pi piti moun nan branch fanmi Manase a. Lèfini, mwen menm pou tèt pa m’, se mwen menm ki pi piti lakay papa m’.
16 Seyè a di l’: -Ou ka fè l’, paske m’ap kanpe la avè ou. Ou pral kraze moun Madyan yo tankou si se te yon sèl moun yo te ye.
17 Jedeyon reponn: -Si reyèlman vre ou vle fè m’ favè sa a, ban m’ yon prèv se ou menm tout bon k’ap pale avè m’ la a.
18 Tanpri, pa deplase kote ou ye a jouk m’a pote yon ofrann mete nan pye ou. Li reponn: -M’ap rete la tann ou.
19 Se konsa, Jedeyon antre, li kwit yon jenn ti kabrit. Li pran yon mamit farin frans, li fè pen san li pa mete ledven ladan l’. Li mete vyann lan nan yon ti panyen, li mete sòs vyann lan nan yon gode, li pote yo bay zanj Seyè a anba pye chenn lan. Li lonje yo ba li.
20 Zanj lan di l’: -Mete vyann lan ak pen yo sou gwo wòch ou wè la a, epi vide sòs la sou yo. Jedeyon fè sa vre.
21 Zanj Seyè a leve baton ki te nan men l’ lan, li lonje l’, li manyen vyann lan ak pen yo ak pwent baton an. Yon dife soti nan wòch la, li boule tout vyann lan ak pen yo. Epi, lamenm zanj Seyè a disparèt devan li.
22 Lè Jèdeyon wè se zanj Seyè a menm ki te parèt devan l’, li di: -Bondye Seyè o! Gade malè ki rive m’ non! Mwen wè zanj Seyè a fas pou fas!
23 Men, Seyè a di l’ konsa: -Ou pa bezwen pè. Poze san ou. Ou p’ap mouri pou sa.
24 Jedeyon bati yon lotèl pou Seyè a la menm. Epi li rele l’: Seyè a bay kè poze. Jouk jòdi a lotèl la la nan ti bouk Ofra a, sou pwopryete ki pou moun Abyezè yo.
25 Menm jou lannwit sa a, Seyè a di Jedeyon konsa: -Pran towo bèf papa ou la, ansanm ak yon lòt towo ki gen sètan. Kraze lotèl papa ou te fè pou Baal la. Koupe poto Achera ki bò kote l’ la.
26 Moute sou ti bit sa a, bati yon lotèl pou Seyè a, Bondye ou la, jan yo konn fè l’ la. Lèfini, pran dezyèm towo a, boule l’ nèt sou lotèl la pou mwen nan dife w’a fè avèk moso poto Achera ou te koupe a.
27 Jedeyon pran dis nan domestik li yo, epi li fè tou sa Seyè a te di l’ fè. Men, li te pè fanmi l’ yo ak lòt moun yo ki rete nan lavil la. Li pa t’ fè sa lajounen, l’ al fè l’ lannwit.
28 Lè mesye yo ki rete nan lavil la leve granmaten, yo wè lotèl Baal la kraze, poto Achera a koupe, epi dezyèm towo a menm boule sou lotèl yo te bati la a.
29 Yonn di lòt: Ki moun ki fè sa, en? Yo tonbe chache, yo t’ap mande moun ki jan sa fè fèt. Yo vin konnen se Jedeyon, pitit Joas la, ki te fè sa.
30 Mesye yo al di Joas konsa: -Fè pitit gason ou lan soti vin jwenn nou isit la. Se pou n’ touye l’! Li kraze lotèl Baal la, epi li koupe gwo poto Achera ki te bò kote l’ la.
31 Joas reponn tout moun ki te kanpe devan l’ yo. Li di yo: -Anhan! Se nou ki pou goumen pou Baal? Se nou ki pou defann li? Enben, moun ki vle goumen pou Baal gen pou l’ mouri anvan solèy leve. Si Baal se yon bondye vre, se li ki pou defann tèt li. Se lotèl li a yo kraze!
32 Depi jou sa a yo rele Jedeyon Jewoubaal paske Joas te di: Kite Baal koresponn ak li, paske se lotèl Baal la li te kraze.
33 Lè sa a, tout moun Madyan yo, tout moun Amalèk yo ak tout moun k’ap viv nan dezè a bò solèy leve yo mete tèt ansanm, yo janbe lòt bò larivyè Jouden an, yo moute kan yo nan plenn Jizreyèl la.
34 Lespri Seyè a desann sou Jedeyon. Li soufle nan yon kòn belye mouton, li rele tout gason nan fanmi Abyezè a vin jwenn li.
35 Apre sa, li voye mesaje nan tout peyi Manase a al rele moun yo pou yo vin jwenn li tou. Li voye mesaje nan peyi Asè, nan peyi Zabilon ak nan peyi Neftali. Tout moun sa yo moute vin jwenn li.
36 Lè sa a, Jedeyon di Bondye konsa: -Si se ou menm vre ki vle sèvi avè m’ pou delivre pèp Izrayèl la,
37 men mwen mete yon moso lenn sou glasi a. Si denmen maten mwen wè gen lawouze sou moso lenn lan sèlman epi tout rès glasi a chèch, lè sa a m’a konnen se ou menm vre ki pral sèvi avè m’ pou delivre pèp Izrayèl la.
38 Se sa ki te rive vre. Nan denmen maten, lè Jedeyon leve byen bonè, li tòde moso lenn lan, li wete dlo ladan l’ kont pou ta plen yon bòl.
39 Lèfini, Jedeyon di Bondye ankò: -Tanpri, pa fache sou mwen non! Kite m’ di ou yon dènye bagay. Kite m’ fè esperyans moso lenn lan yon lòt fwa ankò. Men, fwa sa a se pou moso lenn lan rete chèch, epi pou lawouze sou tout glasi a.
40 Jou lannwit sa a, Bondye fè sa konsa vre: moso lenn lan te rete byen chèch, men te gen lawouze sou tout glasi a.

1 Les enfants d’Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l’Éternel; et l’Éternel les livra entre les mains de Madian, pendant sept ans.
2 La main de Madian fut puissante contre Israël. Pour échapper à Madian, les enfants d’Israël se retiraient dans les ravins des montagnes, dans les cavernes et sur les rochers fortifiés.
3 Quand Israël avait semé, Madian montait avec Amalek et les fils de l’Orient, et ils marchaient contre lui.
4 Ils campaient en face de lui, détruisaient les productions du pays jusque vers Gaza, et ne laissaient en Israël ni vivres, ni brebis, ni boeufs, ni ânes.
5 Car ils montaient avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, ils arrivaient comme une multitude de sauterelles, ils étaient innombrables, eux et leurs chameaux, et ils venaient dans le pays pour le ravager.
6 Israël fut très malheureux à cause de Madian, et les enfants d’Israël crièrent à l’Éternel.
7 Lorsque les enfants d’Israël crièrent à l’Éternel au sujet de Madian,
8 l’Éternel envoya un prophète aux enfants d’Israël. Il leur dit: Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël: Je vous ai fait monter d’Égypte, et je vous ai fait sortir de la maison de servitude.
9 Je vous ai délivrés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient; je les ai chassés devant vous, et je vous ai donné leur pays.
10 Je vous ai dit: Je suis l’Éternel, votre Dieu; vous ne craindrez point les dieux des Amoréens, dans le pays desquels vous habitez. Mais vous n’avez point écouté ma voix.
11 Puis vint l’ange de l’Éternel, et il s’assit sous le térébinthe d’Ophra, qui appartenait à Joas, de la famille d’Abiézer. Gédéon, son fils, battait du froment au pressoir, pour le mettre à l’abri de Madian.
12 L’ange de l’Éternel lui apparut, et lui dit: L’Éternel est avec toi, vaillant héros!
13 Gédéon lui dit: Ah! mon seigneur, si l’Éternel est avec nous, pourquoi toutes ces choses nous sont-elles arrivées? Et où sont tous ces prodiges que nos pères nous racontent, quand ils disent: L’Éternel ne nous a-t-il pas fait monter hors d’Égypte? Maintenant l’Éternel nous abandonne, et il nous livre entre les mains de Madian!
14 L’Éternel se tourna vers lui, et dit: Va avec cette force que tu as, et délivre Israël de la main de Madian; n’est-ce pas moi qui t’envoie?
15 Gédéon lui dit: Ah! mon seigneur, avec quoi délivrerai-je Israël? Voici, ma famille est la plus pauvre en Manassé, et je suis le plus petit dans la maison de mon père.
16 L’Éternel lui dit: Mais je serai avec toi, et tu battras Madian comme un seul homme.
17 Gédéon lui dit: Si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, donne-moi un signe pour montrer que c’est toi qui me parles.
18 Ne t’éloigne point d’ici jusqu’à ce que je revienne auprès de toi, que j’apporte mon offrande, et que je la dépose devant toi. Et l’Éternel dit: Je resterai jusqu’à ce que tu reviennes.
19 Gédéon entra, prépara un chevreau, et fit avec un épha de farine des pains sans levain. Il mit la chair dans un panier et le jus dans un pot, les lui apporta sous le térébinthe, et les présenta.
20 L’ange de Dieu lui dit: Prends la chair et les pains sans levain, pose-les sur ce rocher, et répands le jus. Et il fit ainsi.
21 L’ange de l’Éternel avança l’extrémité du bâton qu’il avait à la main, et toucha la chair et les pains sans levain. Alors il s’éleva du rocher un feu qui consuma la chair et les pains sans levain. Et l’ange de l’Éternel disparut à ses yeux.
22 Gédéon, voyant que c’était l’ange de l’Éternel, dit: Malheur à moi, Seigneur Éternel! car j’ai vu l’ange de l’Éternel face à face.
23 Et l’Éternel lui dit: Sois en paix, ne crains point, tu ne mourras pas.
24 Gédéon bâtit là un autel à l’Éternel, et lui donna pour nom l’Éternel paix: il existe encore aujourd’hui à Ophra, qui appartenait à la famille d’Abiézer.
25 Dans la même nuit, l’Éternel dit à Gédéon: Prends le jeune taureau de ton père, et un second taureau de sept ans. Renverse l’autel de Baal qui est à ton père, et abats le pieu sacré qui est dessus.
26 Tu bâtiras ensuite et tu disposeras, sur le haut de ce rocher, un autel à l’Éternel ton Dieu. Tu prendras le second taureau, et tu offriras un holocauste, avec le bois de l’idole que tu auras abattue.
27 Gédéon prit dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs, et fit ce que l’Éternel avait dit; mais, comme il craignait la maison de son père et les gens de la ville, il l’exécuta de nuit, et non de jour.
28 Lorsque les gens de la ville se furent levés de bon matin, voici, l’autel de Baal était renversé, le pieu sacré placé dessus était abattu, et le second taureau était offert en holocauste sur l’autel qui avait été bâti.
29 Ils se dirent l’un à l’autre: Qui a fait cela? Et ils s’informèrent et firent des recherches. On leur dit: C’est Gédéon, fils de Joas, qui a fait cela.
30 Alors les gens de la ville dirent à Joas: Fais sortir ton fils, et qu’il meure, car il a renversé l’autel de Baal et abattu le pieu sacré qui était dessus.
31 Joas répondit à tous ceux qui se présentèrent à lui: Est-ce à vous de prendre parti pour Baal? est-ce à vous de venir à son secours? Quiconque prendra parti pour Baal mourra avant que le matin vienne. Si Baal est un dieu, qu’il plaide lui-même sa cause, puisqu’on a renversé son autel.
32 Et en ce jour l’on donna à Gédéon le nom de Jerubbaal, en disant: Que Baal plaide contre lui, puisqu’il a renversé son autel.
33 Tout Madian, Amalek et les fils de l’Orient, se rassemblèrent; ils passèrent le Jourdain, et campèrent dans la vallée de Jizréel.
34 Gédéon fut revêtu de l’esprit de l’Éternel; il sonna de la trompette, et Abiézer fut convoqué pour marcher à sa suite.
35 Il envoya des messagers dans tout Manassé, qui fut aussi convoqué pour marcher à sa suite. Il envoya des messagers dans Aser, dans Zabulon et dans Nephthali, qui montèrent à leur rencontre.
36 Gédéon dit à Dieu: Si tu veux délivrer Israël par ma main, comme tu l’as dit,
37 voici, je vais mettre une toison de laine dans l’aire; si la toison seule se couvre de rosée et que tout le terrain reste sec, je connaîtrai que tu délivreras Israël par ma main, comme tu l’as dit.
38 Et il arriva ainsi. Le jour suivant, il se leva de bon matin, pressa la toison, et en fit sortir la rosée, qui donna de l’eau plein une coupe.
39 Gédéon dit à Dieu: Que ta colère ne s’enflamme point contre moi, et je ne parlerai plus que cette fois: Je voudrais seulement faire encore une épreuve avec la toison: que la toison seule reste sèche, et que tout le terrain se couvre de rosée.
40 Et Dieu fit ainsi cette nuit-là. La toison seule resta sèche, et tout le terrain se couvrit de rosée.

1 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
3 And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;
4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.
5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord.
7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord because of the Midianites,
8 That the Lord sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;
9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;
10 And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.
11 And there came an angel of the Lord, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
12 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
14 And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.
16 And the Lord said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
19 And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.
21 Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight.
22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the Lord, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord God! for because I have seen an angel of the Lord face to face.
23 And the Lord said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
25 And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:
26 And build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.
27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
28 And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.
29 And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.
30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.
31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
32 Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.
33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.
34 But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.
35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
36 And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,
37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
38 And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.
39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
